What is Heroin Home Detox?
There are various ways this can be done.
The most common methods are to use a opioid substitution treatment (OST) such as Methadone or Buprenorphine (Subutex).
Don’t fall for Methadone myths
The internet is awash with false information about Methadone.
It has been around for decades and is available at all statutory drug and alcohol services as it is seen as the Gold standard in the UK guidelines published by the Department of Health.
The treatment plan would, ordinarily, start with you taking Methadone when you stop taking Heroin and going up on your dose until the withdrawals have stopped then reducing the dose to zero over a period of weeks/months.
Methadone can remove withdrawal symptoms
Methadone is a fully synthetic opioid and, in large enough doses, will significantly reduce your withdrawal symptoms.
Adjunctive medication will also be provided to help with some of the associated problems that come with withdrawal such as loose stools and lack of sleep.
How Does Methadone Work?
Methadone sits on the opioid receptors in the brain and opens chemical channels.
This will stop the withdrawals you would get if you did not take Methadone.
Methadone mimics Heroin
Remember, Methadone is an opioid and will work in exactly the same way as Heroin.
The difference here is that it is chemically pure, not illegal to possess (if prescribed to you) and straightforward to use.
You simply drink it once a day and, as agreed with your clinician, you reduce the amount you drink each day until you reach zero.
What About Subutex?
Subutex, also known as Buprenorphine, Buvidal and Espranor, is also an opioid but works in a slightly different way.
While it works on the same receptors and attaches itself more strongly than Methadone, it doesn’t cover all the receptors.
Averting precipitative withdrawal
As such you must be in withdrawal before you start taking in.
If you don’t wait, Subutex will knock off any opioids on the receptors which will force you into withdrawal.
This, in itself, is not dangerous but why make yourself ill?
Condensed treatment plans
Subutex can be used in a shorter time than Methadone.
Taken in tablet form (either under the tongue or dissolved on the tongue) it is a once a day medication.
The same principal applies as with Methadone: You go up on your dose until you feel comfortable then reduce, to zero, in an agreed timeline with your addictions clinician.
Is there a Long Term Injection?
Yes. Subutex (Buprenorphine) is now available in an injectable form, known as Buvidal.
As with the tablet form, you need to be in withdrawal before you start it or it will push you into withdrawal which is unnecessary.
Monthly injection
Ordinarily, you have one injection a week, for four weeks then a monthly dose.
To stop Buvidal you can either reduce the injection doses, swap to tablet form or simply stop the injections and allow the medication to reduce by itself over a period of time.
Can a Heroin Home Detox Stop My Addiction?
In most cases? No.
Addiction is not a choice.
Addiction is a symptom of trauma
It is often the result of someone trying to escape the stress and strain of life, past trauma or chronic pain.
Without the therapy to address why you are caught up in addiction a relapse is a very high probability.
Cravings are not a lack of willpower
Due to the changes in brain chemistry, when you stop taking Heroin you are going to experience cravings.
Dealing with these can be very, very difficult.
Key Takeaways
- Low Cost Heroin Home Detox is risky and often ineffective without professional support.
- Addiction requires treatment for underlying trauma; cravings stem from brain chemistry changes, not willpower.
- Rehab offers comprehensive care, therapy, and support for sustained recovery over home detox.
- Home detox can incur high costs due to consultations and medication, making rehab more economical.
- Find Me a Rehab provides free clinical advice and referrals for safe detox options.

Rehab offers the best chance of a sustained recovery
In a rehab centre, you have an expert addictions clinician who, if necessary, can adjust your treatment plan.
There are therapy groups, as well as individual sessions, that address your unresolved trauma and approaches to stress.
Family therapy repairs the strained and damaged relationships that occur when you get caught up in the madness of addiction.
Most of the staff who work in rehab have personal experience of addiction
Most of the staff who work in rehab centres have been in recovery, themselves, for many years.
While everyone who goes in for treatment, has different experiences, there are many common factors.
These support staff understand.
The other people in treatment will also understand and you are all there with one aim in mind: recovery.
Our clinicians have very extensive experience in treating heroin addiction
Our experienced addictions clinicians at Find Me a Rehab have treated hundreds of people caught up in the madness of addiction to heroin.
They have worked in private rehabs, private hospitals, statutory services, NHS hospitals and prisons.

Free clinical advice and treatment referrals
We can arrange a home detox or provide a free referral to any centre for residential detox and rehab.
In rehab you will learn the skills you need to approach difficult situations with a new viewpoint.
Planning for lifelong abstinence
Relapse prevention is the mainstay of the psychological work you undertake.
At the end of your time in rehab, you will be well equipped to stay abstinent.
All centres provide aftercare, for a minimum of 12 months.
This can be in the form of a weekly, on site, support group or by video conferencing.
They also provide telephone support.
By having medication at home, on your own, you will have none of this and it is extremely unlikely that you will be able to deal with cravings and/or situations where you are around people using Heroin.
Is it Cheaper to Have a Detox At Home?
Not necessarily: No.
With a home heroin detox you will have to pay for consultations with an addictions clinician, private prescription fees and the medication.
Because this will not be on an NHS prescription (the NHS is not funded for this so your GP can not help) a pharmacy can, literally, charge you what they want to.
Outpatient treatment costs can spiral
Buvidal injections can cost the Pharmacy over £300 each so they will put a significant mark up on top.
When you add all these costs together it is actually cheaper to go into a rehab centre.
While no centre would accept you for less than 2 weeks, a months treatment can be arranged for far less than you think.

Rapid detox comes with significant considerations
The reason why you can not go into a centre for 2 weeks is because you would still be in withdrawal and would go home craving.
This would be dangerous because you will have lost tolerance and thus likely to use more than you need and overdose.
Can Find Me a Rehab Arrange Low Cost Home Heroin Detox?

Be wary of alternative treatments
Unscrupulous companies offer all manor of alternative treatments for heroin withdrawal, such as Ibogaine.
They don’t work for the simple reason that they can not work.
These substances have been associated with many deaths.
You can not get these, legally, in the UK.
