When Crystal Meth Use Becomes a Problem
Crystal Meth, which resembles ice, is an illegal street drug. It has no medical uses.
It is an amphetamine that brings multiple phyiscal and psychological problems when you use it.
It is a class A drug meaning you can go to prison for up to seven years and/or an unlimited fine.
* Taking more Crystal Meth than you used to
* Finding it difficult to cut down or stop
* Strong urges to take Crystal Meth
* Spending increasing time obtaining or using it
* Continuing to use it despite the problems it causes you
* Feeling unwell when you can't get some or can't get the
usual amount you use
Dependence and addiction are not the same thing.
A clinician can help assess what is happening and what level of support may be appropriate.
Why you should not stop Crystal Meth Suddenly
Stopping Crystal Meth suddenly can cause very severe withdrawal symptoms.
An addiction clinician would never advise you to suddenly stop using Crystal Meth.
Because Crystal Meth is an illegal drug and can not be prescribed, there is no reduction or tapering regime.
The only way to stop using it is under medical supervision with prescribed medication to reduce and stop the withdrawals.
The withdrawals from Crystal Meth are due to a lack of two naturally occuring "feel good" bodily chemicals which occurs when you stop taking it: Dopamine and Norepinephrine.
Within less than a day (and usually after a few hours) you will experience: Extreme fatigue, crashing low mood, the need to sleep for up to 36 hours, uncontrollable anxiety and irritation as well as suicidal thoughts.
This is, sadly, only the first phase of Crystal Meth withdrawal.
Your brain will tell you, what you already know: If you take Crystal Meth you will stop your withdrawals.
The problem is, your brain has started to adjust and can't process the same amount of Crystal meth.
This means you are highly likely to take an accidental overdose.
The dose, length of use, reason for taking Crystal Meth , other medicines and medical, as well as psychological history, all matter.
Crystal Meth addiction treatment should therefore be planned with an appropriate clinician who can draw up a treatment plan. This will include medication that will deal with the withdrawals.

Find Out MoreWhat Does Crystal Meth Addiction Treatment Involve?
Treatment starts with an assessment. A clinician will usually need to understand how much Crystal Meth is being taken, how long it has been used for, how you take it and any other drug and alcohol use.
Your physical and psychological health is also part of the assessment.
Where dependence is present, treatment will usually include prescribed medication to address the withdrawals and stabilise your physical and psychological health.
The setting depends on individual risk and support needs.
For most people who are seeking help for Crystal Meth, a structured residential period of rehab is the most appropriate treatment.
Find Me a Rehab can help you to explore residential treatment options where medical support, therapy, relapse prevention and aftercare are provided in one setting.
Treatment may also include group or individual therapy and recovery approaches such as SMART recovery or 12 STEP programmes.
The right programme depends on the person, not simply the substance involved.

Crystal Meth, Opioids and Other Sedating Drugs
Taking Crystal Meth and Alcohol is extremely dangerous.
Because of the way the brain processes both Alcohol and Crystal Meth the sedating effects of Alcohol can be masked by your use of Crystal Meth.
This means you can experience acute alcohol intoxication.
You can overlaod your respiratory system leading to respiratory depression or fatality.
When you mix Alcohol and Crystal Meth you run the risk of cardiovascular problems, including heart faliure.
Kidney failure is also an effect of mixing Alcohol and Crystal Meth.
Dehydration and hyperthermia can also occur. These are acute medical emergencies. Left untreated, they can cause fatality.
Using Crystal Meth and Opioids can lead to the brain being pulled in different directions meaning you do not feel the effects of the Opioid so take more.
However, the Opioid will still depress your breathing circuit and you can experience an Opioid overdose.
When you take Crystal Meth with other stimulants this can lead to a phenomena known as stimulant stacking.
Not only will this spike your anxiety but can cause an acute medical emergency due to dangerously high blood pressure and heart rate.
Your body will overheat to extremes that can not sustain life.
This can lead to stroke and fatality.
If you use Crystal Meth with Benzodiazepines, you may not feel the usual sedating effects that you usually would have got from the Benzodiazepines.
This means you will take more than your brain can process leading to an accidental overdose.

Crystal Meth Addiction Treatment:Frequently Asked Questions on Crystal Meth Addiction Treatment
Unsurprisingly, we get asked a lot of questions, to make things easier for you, we have included some of the most common one below.
Can I have a Home Detox for Crystal Meth Addiction?
It would be the exception, rather than the rule.
The withdrawals from Crystal Meth can be extremely distressing, cause paranoia and require significant medical monitoring and intervention.
Treatment at home can be arranged but the cost would be far higher than residential treatment as you would need a live in specialist nurse, 24/7, and the oversight of a consultant psychiatrist in addictions as well as GP with addiction qualifications to visit and monitor you.
Can I go Cold Turkey on Crystal Meth?
No.
When you take Crystal Meth your brain dumps large quantities of both Dopamine and Norepinephrine into your blood stream, hence why you feel invincible, alert and happy.
When you stop taking it, the brain stops doing this. While it will go back to normal functioning in time, while it does you will experience a severe lack of these two chemicals.
This is what causes the symptoms of withdrawal.
You will experience extreme fatigue and may sleep for up to 36 hours. Your anxiety will be out of control and your mood can be so low you feel suicidal.
Your appetite will be uncontrollable and your memory and ability to think clearly can be distorted.
Withdrawal from Crystal Meth can lead to psychosis, fever, tremor and dehydration.
None of this is anything to do with willpower (or the lack of it) but everything to do with science.
When you feel withdrawals your brain will tell you what you already know: If you take Crystal Meth you will feel better. This is known as cravings and will be on your mind: 24/7.
The problem is that your brain, as soon as you stop using Crystal Meth, starts to readjust. This means it can’t process the same amounts as what you were taking even the day before.
This is where people accidentally overdose.
Is there a detox for Crystal Meth?
No, not in the same way as there is for Alcohol or Heroin where substitute medications are used that work on the same receptors in the brain.
A detox usually means using a substitute medication that mimics the effects of the drug/alcohol you have been using and reducing it slowly until you are recovered.
This is not possible with Crystal Meth.
Instead, a clinician will prescribe you medication to lower your anxiety, blood pressure and heartrate as well as helping with your sleep.
This can ensure you do not experience withdrawals which lead to cravings and overdose.
Can I do a 7 day detox for Crystal Meth?
There are some rehab centres that will admit you for seven days.
However, due to the length of time it takes for the brain to recover from Crystal Meth you may experience cravings when you leave. This puts you at risk of accidental overdose because your brain won’t be able to tolerate the same amount of Crystal Meth as you were previously using.
The admitting clinician will have to decide if you can have a short admission.
Can I do Crystal Meth rehab without the 12 STEPS?
Yes.
There are a number of rehab centres that do not use a 12 step approach.
We can give you a list.
Can I do a detox for Crystal Meth without group therapy?
Yes.
There are a small number of centres that provide rehab treatment without group therapy.
We would be happy to give you a list of centres you can speak to.
Why do I need rehab for Crystal Meth addiction?
Crystal Meth addiction is serious.
The effects Crystal Meth have on your brain, when you stop using, need expert medical monitoring and intervention.
You will need prescription medication, prescribed by an addiction specialist clinician, to reduce the withdrawals as well as monitoring by qualified nurses to ensure your blood pressure, heart rate and temperature are within safe parameters.
As with any addiction, what you take is a symptom of something else.
You may have unresolved psychological trauma, PTSD, depression, anxiety or more than one. If you can deal with the underlying issue you stand a good chance of a long and happy recovery.
Relapse prevention is an essential part of recovery. Learning how to deal with potentially triggering situations when you go home enables you to self care.
All centres provide a minimum of a years aftercare in the form of a weekly support group and a dedicated phone line for when you feel you might use.
Can I do residential rehab for Crystal Meth using SMART?
Yes.
A number of centres use SMART instead of the 12 STEPS.
We can give you a list of centres to speak with.

It’s use has been connected with multiple deaths in centres’ overseas.
Your travel insurance would not cover you if something goes wrong.
Can I get Crystal Meth Addiction Treatment On My Health Insurance?

In the UK, addiction treatment is usually an add-on to standard policies.
Please contact your insurer.

What Are The Stages Of Crystal Meth Addiction Treatment?
There are four recognised stages of Crystal Meth addiction:
- Crash phase(first few hours to 24 hours): Extreme fatigue, very excessive sleep, irritability, anxiety and immediate low mood with suicidal thoughts. paranoia and unstoppable appetite.
- Acute phase (days 3-10): Nightmares, severe lack of co-ordination and interruption of normal mental functioning, fatigue, irritability, paranoia and increased cravings.
- Sub acute (2-3 weeks): Irritability, inability to feel pleasure, tiredness and low mood. Cravings will persist
- Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS): This can last for several months. Fatigue, low mood, poor concentration, mood disturbances and emotional instability.
Why do I need a 28 programme for Crystal Meth Addiction
It takes your brain, at least, 28 days to recover from Crystal Meth addiction.
The brain will start to adjust within hours after you stop using Crystal Meth but your body doesn’t store enough Dopamine and Norepinephrine to compensate for the amounts your brain was dumping when you used Crystal Meth.
It is the lack of these two naturally occurring bodily chemicals that causes the symptoms known as withdrawal.
While you may experience some mild symptoms after 28 days, a month is usually sufficient time for the brain to stabilise chemical regulation.
Can I get a Crystal Meth Detox On The NHS?
Possibly.
The NHS is not commissioned, by the Government to provide addiction services, this is the responsibility of your local authority (who you pay your council tax to).
Your local authority can run the service themselves, pay a charity to run it, a private company or pay the NHS to run it.
If you use a local authority funded (free to use service), you will need to attend regular meetings with your keyworker and be on time for all groups and workshops before they will consider putting you forward for residential treatment.
They will want to see a commitment to the process.
If they do put your name forward to the local authority and they approve funding you will not have a choice of location, length of treatment or method of treatment (groups, 12 STEP, etc).
