Contact UsWhen Cocaine use becomes a problem
Cocaine is an illegal stimulant drug.
It is extremely addictive and can rapidly change your behaviour leading to significant consequences.
Cocaine use can lead to serious damage to your health.
Signs that it is time to get help include:
* Taking ever increasing amounts to have the same effect
* Spending money you can't afford to pay for it
* Overwhelming urges to use Cocaine
* Borrowing or stealing money to pay for it
* Using up a lot of time sourcing Cocaine
* Putting yourself and others, at risk through using it
* Continuing to use Cocaine even though you know the
problems it is causing
* Feeling unwell when not using it
* Making unsafe or risky decisions when using Cocaine

Why you should not stop taking Cocaine suddenly
Unlike other drugs, such as Alcohol or Heroin, there is no detox for Cocaine.
This is because Cocaine is a very short acting drug.
That is not to say that medication isn't used to help people who want help with Cocaine addiction. Adjunctive medication is used to help with withdrawal symptoms (blood pressure, anxiety, poor sleep, etc).
If you stop taking Cocaine suddenly (or reduce too quickly) you are likely to experience what is known as withdrawal.
This is because your brain has become used to you taking Cocaine and adjusted to it. If you suddenly stop, the brain can not re-adjust immediately.
While it does, it will fire off incorrect chemical messaging. This causes withdrawals.
Symptoms of withdrawal can include:
* Rapid low mood
* Not being able to feel pleasure
* Uncontrolled anxiety
* Extreme irritability
* Chronic fatigue
* Slowed down thinking
* Very poor memory
* Uncontrollable cravings
* Massive appetite
* Severe dehydration
* Very poor sleep or very excessive sleeping
* Nightmares
Unlike other drugs and alcohol, there are no reduction plan you can use.
Treatment protocols are to have a planned stoppage date,either by going into a residential treatment setting or, if eligable, having treatment at home.

Find Out MoreWhat Does Cocaine Addiction Treatment Involve?
Treatment starts with an assessment. A clinician will usually need to understand how much Cocaine is being taken, how it is being taken and for how long.
The clinician will also need to know about your general state of health, any underlying conditions as well as prescribed/un-prescribed medication and your alcohol use.
For those whose Cocaine use is very significant, a short period of adjunctive medication is usually needed. This is rareley for more than a week: at most.
Adjunctive medication helps to lower blood pressure, your anxiety and lack of sleep which will all rise, very significantly, when you stop taking Cocaine.
This has nothing to do with willpower but is simply due to natural chemical changes in the brain.
The mainstay of treatment for Cocaine addiction remains residential rehab. This is because, in rehab, you will recieve the four essential elements of recovery:
* Medication to help with withdrawals (there is no detox for
Cocaine)
* Group therapy: If you get to understand why you are taking
Cocaine you stand a far better chance of staying abstinent
* Relapse prevention: Rehab is a supportive environment
with trained/experienced staff (many in long term recovery
themselves). When you leave, with relapse prevention skills,
you will have the tools to support yourself when
challenging situations arise that make relapse a possibility
* Aftercare: All centres offer a weekly aftercare group. you can
either attend, in person, or by logging in on-line.
While, as clinicians, we always recommend a group therapy approach for recovery from addiction, we appreciate that some people would prefer not to do this.
There are a very small number of centres that use an entirely one to one therapy approach. We can signpost you, accordingly.
If you want a group therapy based centre, but not one that uses a 12 step approach, we can direct you to centres that use alternative models.

Cocaine, Opioids, Alcohol and other drugs
Cocaine is a stimulant.
Many people get into a habit of using Cocaine to speed themselves up and then rely on other drugs and alcohol, to slow themselves down.
This becomes a very destructive pattern.
When you take Alcohol and Cocaine together (or within a period of time when either is still in your system) the body produces a chemical called Cocaethylene.
Aside from causing possible long term liver damage, Cocaethylene can cause you to have a stroke, heart attack or a seizure. A sufficent level of this chemical can be fatal.
If you use Cocaine as well as Heroin/Opioids you are asking your body to perform a "push/pull" motion.
When this happens, you will not feel the usual effects of the Cocaine, or the opioids, so will take more which puts you at very significant risk of overdose and fatality.
