In essence, there is no such thing as NHS rehab for addiction.
All local authorities in the United Kingdom provide free to use addiction treatment for anyone living in the area.
Local authorities are free to contract in whomever they choose to run their service.
Some contract in charities. Others use private company or 3rd sector providers and others buy in services from the NHS.
Ultimately, the local authority decides and pays, for your treatment.
Whether or not your local authority service will pay for you to go into a residential rehab/detox centre depends entirely on whether your local authority is prepared to pay for it.
Any application for funding by your local service has to be discussed with the service commissioners at the local authority.
Substitute prescribing for opioid/heroin dependent clients is always available (if appropriate) and many offer a community home alcohol detox if you need one, though the criteria is very rigid for reasons of safety.
Traditionally, substitute prescribing has been aimed at stabiliation and long term maintainence.
The only criteria to be accepted by your local authority run service is that you are able to show evidence that you reside in the area.
You will need to be registered with an NHS GP and be willing to share those details.
Local authority services are completely free to use.
If you are given a prescription, regardless of who provides the service, it will be an NHS prescription and the usual rules as to the amount you pay and exemptions from prescriptions fees, remain.

Your local authority funded community addiction treatment service may nominate you for residential treatment but the process is a formal one.
When you sign up with your local service, you will be assigned a keyworker.
They will meet with you on a regular basis and draw up a treatment plan which will include keywork sessions as well as groups and sessions.
If you need substitute prescribing because of heroin and opioid addiction they will arrange an appointment with a prescribing clinician at the service and attend with you.
Should you need help with cocaine addiction, they will provide support as there is no detox for cocaine.
Your keyworker can also signpost you should you need help with benefits, housing, mental health support, domestic violence support, etc.
If you are alcohol dependent and require a detox, the service may be able to offer you an "at home" alcohol detox providing that:
* You drink less than 30 units a day
* Have not had a detox within the last six months
* No history of alcohol withdrawal related seizures
* Free of significant drug use
* Be in good general health
* Absence of certain prescribed medications (usually Pregabalin, Gabapentin, Benzodiazepines, cyclopyrrolones)
* Have an adult able to supervise you 24/7 for the first few days.
These always commence on a Monday.
With regards to residential treatment it is important to remember that budgets are very, very constrained.
Only those with the highest clinical need will be put forward to a funding panel where your key worker will make the case for funding.
The service commissioners from the local authority have the final say.
What will the NHS provide in rehab?
If the local authority funding panel agrees to fund you it wil be at a centre which offers preferable rates.
Usually, the local authority negotiates reduced rates for a certain number of bed days a year.
Once the budget is spent: It is spent.
Because they are very limited in what they can provide they sometimes only offer a detox.
The centre they provide may be a long distance from where you live and your admission date will be at the convieniance of the centre so as to minimise empty bed days.
If the centre provides a detox only, you may be able to have period in a rehab centre.
Sometimes those who are funded for rehab are able to be admitted on the day they complete detox.
Sadly, this isn't always possible and there may be a gap.
This, in itself, can be very problematic.
Most people turn to drink and drugs to blot out difficult memories, psychological trauma, anxiety, stress, depression, etc.
Very soon after you start your detox, the thoughts you were trying to block will come to the fore.
The anxiety and depression you were self medicating will flare up: Quickly.
If you aren't able to deal with these underlying issues, you will, naturally, go back to the one thing your brain tells you will quell them: Drink and/or drugs.
What are the advantages of NHS V private rehab?
Private rehab and home treatment gives you more control over where you get treatment, what treatment you recieve and when.
All private rehab centres provide detox and rehab: Combined.
No private centre offers detox as a standalone treatment.
Providing a bed is available and you have been accepted for treatment, you may be able to be admitted the same day or the next.
While there is no difference in outcome if you choose a centre that operates a 12 step model or a non 12 step model you get to make that choice if you pay for treatment.
While, as clinicians, we always advise you to inform your GP when considering addiction treatment, it may be possible to seek treatment, privately, without doing so.
Some health insurance policies cover drug and alcohol addiction rehab (and/or your employee cover may do.)

While you would have a consultant psychiatrist in charge of your care, the treatment plan and process is exactly the same as any other rehab centre:
* Detox
* Group therapy
* Relapse prevention
* Aftercare
The only difference is that you would be seen by the consultant in ward round once a week.
In a private hospital the same rules apply:
You must atttend all groups and meetings, on time. The medication you would recieve, if applicable, would be exactly the same and the nursing/support worker care would also be identical. Being in a private hospital doesn't mean any difference in the treatment process.
You are paying for a brand. If you opt for a lower cost centre the same treatment plan can be accessed for £6,950.

Call UsHow long do I need in rehab to recover from addiction?
The amount of time you will need in rehab determines the cost.
Unlike booking a holiday, the time you can book for, as a minimum, depends entirely on your clinical need.
For an example, if you are heavily dependent on alcohol and need a medication assisted detox, this will take an absolute minimum of seven to ten days.
Again, it depends on a number of factors but, usually, can not be negotiated.
Your safety is the absolute priority.
Clients who are opioid dependent, for example, will require a longer admission. Rapid detoxing is unsafe and no reputable centre would offer one.
A rapid detox puts you at very significant risk as you would leave rehab in withdrawal with no tolerance to opioids. The risk is that you would try and relieve your withdrawals with an amount of opioids you feel will settle you.
Invariably, this amount would lead to overdose.
The same applies to benzodiazpeines and a number of other substances.
Do some people need more than 28 days?
The therapy programme in recovery is a revolving process.
It doesn't mattter if you get admitted on a Monday or a Sunday.
Those who stay more than a week usually recieve a weekly session of individual therapy.
Nearly a hundred years of rehab research shows that group therapy is the most effective treatment approach.
If you think you are not the kind of person that would benefit from group therapy then you absoultely are the kind of person that will!
The reason that some people need more than 28 days is because some drug dependencies can take more than 28 days to detox from. A good example being benzodiazepines.
However, if you work with your GP/consultant, you can taper down at home and then enter into residential treatment for the final furlong.
