The National Health Service is an incredible organisation that provides care: From the cradle to the grave, just as it was invented to do.
It provides the services it is commissoned to do and can not provide those it isn't funded to provide.
Unless an NHS Trust has been commissoned to provide drug and alcohol treatment, the NHS isn't available for addiction treatment.
No accident and emergency service is commissoned to provide addiction treatment: Even in an emergency.
You can not circumvent the system.
Yes, the NHS has a duty of care, but only to what is reasonable in the circumstances.
If you turn up to A+E seeking a detox you are not going to get one.
They will assess you and only provide treatment until you are safe enough to be discharged.
If you are in withdrawal because you have stopped drinking or taking drugs they will only give you enough medication (if appropriate) to ensure you are safe to go home.
They would only ever admit you if it was absolutely necessary and only until they could discharge you.
Why?
Because they are not funded for it.
What free services are available?
Every local council in the United Kingdom provides free to use services to anyone who lives in the area.
These are completely free to use providing you can prove you live in the area.
The service provided depends, entirely, on the contract agreed between the council and the service they bring in to run it on there behalf.
Your council may bring in a charity, 3rd sector provider, private company or the NHS to run their service: It is entirely their choice.
All services will provide alcohol advice and treatment.
Some will, where appropriate, provide an at home detox for alcohol.
However, the criteria for this is very tight and there is no wiggle room.
Essentially, you have to be:
* Drinking under 30 units a day
* No previous detox within the last 6 months
* No history of alcohol related withdrawal seizures
* Absence of relevant pre-existing conditions
* Not on certain medications
* Have a responsible adult present 24/7 for the first few days
Services will only consider you for this after a period of engagement and attending keywork sessions and group meetings.
Local authority commissioned services will provide substitute prescriptions for opioid and heroin dependency but this is part of the treatment process and not a standalone service.
Support is also given for cocaine addiction.
Services are not funded to provide substitute prescribing for other addictions, including cocaine.
Will my local council pay for rehab?
Yes and no.
Local authority finances are very stretched.
The number of people they can fund for residential treatment and the quality of the service you will provide is solely determined by that fact.
When using a local authority free to use service you will be allocated a keyworker.
Your keyworker, if you attend all appointments and groups you have been alinged to, may apply for funding through what is known as a funding panel.
This is a meeting between the keyworker, an addiction clinician for the service and the fundholder (the Council).
Those allocated funding, within local authority services, are clients who, usually, physically frail and/or consuming very large quantities of alcohol and/or drugs.
If you are awarded funding the rehab you go to could be the other end of the country.
Sometimes, to reduce cost, you will only be given a detox in a residential centre without any therapy, relapse prevention or aftercare.
Detox alone leads to rapid relapse because the thoughts and feelings you were suppressing with drugs and alcohol are now back in play.
On occasion, they may provide a detox and rehab but there may be a gap between the date you finish detox and the date you start rehab: At a different site. This delay can lead to relapse.

The amount of time you will need in rehab determines the cost.
Unlike booking a holiday, the time you can book for, as a minimum, depends entirely on your clinical need.
For an example, if you are heavily dependent on alcohol and need a medication assisted detox, this will take an absolute minimum of seven to ten days.
Again, it depends on a number of factors but, usually, can not be negotiated.
Your safety is the absolute priority.
Clients who are opioid dependent, for example, will require a longer admission. Rapid detoxing is unsafe and no reputable centre would offer one.
A rapid detox puts you at very significant risk as you would leave rehab in withdrawal with no tolerance to opioids. The risk is that you would try and relieve your withdrawals with an amount of opioids you feel will settle you.
Invariably, this amount would lead to overdose.
The same applies to benzodiazpeines and a number of other substances.
What is the lowest cost for a week?
Mild alcohol and stimulant (cocaine) dependency can be addressed with a combination of residential and outpatient recovery.
No centre would accept you for less than a week.
A seven day admission can be achieved from as little as £1,975 a week.

For those seeking treatment at home, we always advise clients to seek residential treatment as it is inherently safer and often far less expensive.
Why do all centres reccomend a 28 day programme?
Detox, alone, is only one element of recovery from addiction.
Your brain will not start to absorb the essential elements of therapy, relapse prevention and aftercare until it has returned to a more normal level of functioning.
Some people can starts groups on their first day, others may need to wait a day or two due to the physical effects of detox.
All centres follow a gradiated therapy programme: Either a 12 step, SMART or eclectic approach.
This means that, when following the programme, there will be elements completed along the way.
28 days gives you the opportunity to make very significant progress in your recovery.
That, in no way, means that your treatment ends when you leave.
Rehab is only the very beginning of the process. It gives you the springboard you need to achieve long term recovery.
Do some people need more than 28 days?
The therapy programme in recovery is a revolving process.
It doesn't mattter if you get admitted on a Monday or a Sunday.
Those who stay more than a week usually recieve a weekly session of individual therapy.
Nearly a hundred years of rehab research shows that group therapy is the most effective treatment approach.
If you think you are not the kind of person that would benefit from group therapy then you absoultely are the kind of person that will!
The reason that some people need more than 28 days is because some drug dependencies can take more than 28 days to detox from. A good example being benzodiazepines.
However, if you work with your GP/consultant, you can taper down at home and then enter into residential treatment for the final furlong.
