When MDMA Use Becomes a Problem
MDMA is an illegal stimulant drug.
It is also known as Molly or Ecstacy and produces both a stimulant and psychedelic effect.
This means that when you take MDMA you feel extremely energetic while your perceptions of time are very distorted.
Your perceptions will be drastically altered and you will get huge enjoyment from things you touch.
Signs that it may be time to seek help include:
* Taking ever increasing amounts of MDMA
* Finding it difficult to stop or cut down MDMA use
* Strong urges to take MDMA
* Spending increasing time obtaining or using MDMA
* Continuing to use MDMA despite the problems it causes
you with work, studies, relationships, etc
* Feeling unwell when you can't get some MDMAor less than
you want to use
Dependence and addiction are not the same thing. An addiction clinician can help assess what is happening if you need MDMA Addiction Treatment.

Why you should not stop MDMA suddenly
Stopping MDMA suddenly can cause withdrawal symptoms.
No addiction clinician or your GP would ever advise you to stop using MDMA suddenly.
The symptoms of MDMA withdrawal, which can start within as little as 24 hours after you stop using, include:
* Acute low mood
* Depression
* Extreme irritability
* Uncontrollable mood swings
* Severe agitation
* Insatiable cravings 24/7
* Poor memory and concentration
* Brain fog
* Extreme fatigue
* Exhaustion
* Sleep disturbances
* No appetite or uncontrollable appetite
* Muscle aches and pains
* General physical malaise
Because MDMA is an illegally used drug, there is no tapering schedule. This is because you can not be assured that what you buy from a dealer is the same product every time.
This means that MDMA Addiction Treatment should always be a planned treatment and you should not stop using before admission as you would with alcohol or heroin.

Find Out MoreWhat Does MDMA Addiction Treatment Involve?
MDMA Addiction Treatment starts with an assessment.
A clinician will usually need to understand how much MDMA is being used, how long it has been used, whether , any other substances involced and relevant physical or mental health conditions.
Where dependence is present, treatment will usually be a period of treatment in a residential rehab centres.
The setting depends on individual risk and support needs.
For most people, a structured residential programme may be appropriate.
Find Me a Rehab can help you to explore residential rehab options where medical support, therapy, relapse prevention and aftercare are provided in one setting.
Treatment may also include group or individual therapy and recovery approaches such as SMART Recovery or 12 STEP programmes. The right programme depends on the person, not simply the substance involved.
MDMA, Opioids, Alcohol and Other Drugs
Mixing MDMA and Opioids is very dangerous, indeed.
Many people take other drugs and alcohol with MDMA to try and reduce the effects.
The problem is that the brain simply can not cope with the effects all these substances have on receptors and incorrect chemical messaging occurs as a result.
People often take Opioids after using MDMA to try and soften the crash that occurs when MDMA wears off. This can lead to respiratory depression, coma and fatality.
Because one of the effects of MDMA use is emotional flatness,users often combine using MDMA with antidepressants. This can lead to a serious serotonin overdose and what is known as serotonin syndrome. This can lead to acute confusion, seizures and fatality.
Some people take hallucinogenic drugs to intensify the effects of MDMA. The brain simply can not cope with both of these and this can lead to psychosis, respiratory distress and panic.
Mixing Alcohol and MDMA should also be avoided.
When you drink Alcohol while taking MDMA, you run the risk of dehydration, heatstrokes and blackout.

Frequently Asked Questions on MDMA Addiction Treatment
Unsurprisingly, we get asked a lot of questions on MDMA Addiction Treatment, to make things easier for you, we have included some of the most common one below.
Is there a detox for MDMA?
No.
MDMA is an illegal drug and there is no substitute medication that can be given as you would for an Alcohol or Heroin detox.
The treatment is to medically monitor the person and to use prescribed medication to manage the withdrawals.
If you do not keep the withdrawals under control, your brain will tell you what you already know, that if you take MDMA you will stop the withdrawals.
The problem is, that even after a day of abstinence, your brain has started to readjust and simply won’t be able to cope with the same amount of MDMA you were taking. As such, you are likely to overdose: Accidentally.
There is no emergency drug that can be given to reverse the effects of MDMA. Medical staff will do what they can to manage symptoms.
How long does a MDMA detox take?
Unlike Heroin on Alcohol, there is no substitute medication you can be given to detox.
Treatment involves a period of monitoring, under medical supervision with medication being given to control withdrawal symptoms.
If you are dependent on MDMA and you stop taking it, you will develop symptoms in as little as 24 hours.
This is known as the Crash phase and can last up to 72 hours.
You are likely to experience, among other things:
- Poor concentration
- Extreme low mood
- Crippling anxiety
- Extreme fatigue and exhaustion
The next phase lasts from around day 4 to day 10. During this time you may see lingering symptoms such as:
- Cravings
- Very poor sleep
- Mood swings
- Poor concentration
After this time you may well continue to experience depression, anxiety and cravings.
These can persist for several months.
What happens if I go cold turkey on MDMA?
Trying to go Cold Turkey on MDMA is very dangerous.
Please do not attempt this. It is not safe.
Within a day or two you will start to experience withdrawals.
Your brain will tell you what you already know: If you use MDMA, your withdrawals will stop.
The problem is, as soon as you stop using MDMA, your brain starts to adjust and even after a day of not using, if you took the same amount as you did, you are very likely to overdose. Your brain simply can not process the same amount.
An overdose can be fatal.
There is no emergency reversal drug as their is with Heroin overdose.
Can I do a MDMA detox without the 12 STEPS?
Yes.
There are a small number of centres that use a SMART or STRENGTH model of group therapy.
We can give you a list of centres to speak to.

Will the NHS provide a MDMA detox?
Your local authority is responsible for addiction treatment in your area.
Some local authorities provide the service themselves. Most contract services out to a private company, a charity or buy in NHS services.
If you register with your local free to use service you will be assigned a keyworker.
You will need to attend every meeting and group session before they will consider applying for funding for you to attend residential rehab for free.
It is, usually, very rare for someone to be allocated funds for rehab if they are addicted to MDMA.
Can I get a home detox for MDMA?
A home detox for MDMA simply isn’t safe.
Unlike Alcohol where substitute medications can be given with recognised medication regimes, the same is not the case with MDMA.
The withdrawal symptoms with MDMA can be severe and very dangerous.
You need careful monitoring and prescribed medication in order to safely withdraw.
The only way it could be done would be with a live in specialist nurse and the oversight of a consultant psychiatrist in addictions.
This can be arranged but would be very cost prohibitive.
Can I do a MDMA detox in 7 days?
Possibly.
There is no detox for MDMA as there is for Alcohol or Heroin.
The most acute withdrawals subside from around day 4 until day 10.
After 7 days, usually, you will be free of the most worrying symptoms of withdrawal, you may continue to experience cravings, sleep issues, mood swings, and cognitive problems.
The problem is, should you go home and the cravings become too much you may relapse.
Your brain has now adjusted to the absence of MDMA so it simply won’t be able to handle the same amounts that you used to take. This is why people accidentally overdose.
How much is a 7 day MDMA detox?
A weeks MDMA detox in a fully CQC registered rehab centre is £1,975.
This includes everything you need:
- Clinicians
- Nurses
- Support staff
- Therapists

- Relapse prevention
- After (minimum of one year)
- Restaurant style catering
- Room/bathroom

What is the timeline of MDMA withdrawal?
There are three recognised phases of MDMA withdrawal.
Symptoms occur because of chemical changes in the brain when you stop taking MDMA.
Your brain, when you used MDMA, became used to it, hence why you had to take increasing amounts to have the same effect.
When you stop, the brain struggles to readjust. As it does it fires off incorrect chemical messaging. This is what causes the physical symptoms known as withdrawal.
The first starts, usually, within 24-72 hours and is known as the crash phase
During this time you are likely to experience:
- Chronic low mood
- Extreme fatigue
- Crippling anxiety
- Poor concentration
During days 4-10, you will continue to experience:
- Cravings
- Sleep deprivation
- Mood swings
- Poor concentration
After around day 10, for a few weeks, you will see slow improvements but you will likely continue to experience:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Cravings
It can take your brain several months to recover.

What is the difference between comedown and withdrawal with MDMA?
A comedown is what you experience after your last use of MDMA.
You can expect this to happen within 24-72 hours after your first use of MDMA.
The symptoms are very similar to withdrawal from MDMA but will not last so long.
This is because your brain has not adjusted to continued use of MDMA and is not reacting to you stopping but merely is processing the dose you took.
If you took MDMA on a weekend only, your brain will not adjust on a long term basis.
However, if you take it daily, your brain will adjust and thus, if you stop, you will go into withdrawal.
This is because your brain had adjusted to MDMA being on receptors and when you stop it will struggle to quickly go back to normal.
While it does, it will fire off incorrect chemical messaging which is what causes the signs of withdrawal.
Can A+E help me with MDMA detox?
No.
NHS accident and emergency departments are not funded to assist with drug and alcohol detox.
If you go to A+E because you are in withdrawal the duty of care that the staff are required to extend is limited to what is reasonable in the circumstances.
Unless there are compelling medical reasons to provide treatment they will send you home with some safety advice and contact details for local (free to use) services.
If they do admit you, you will be discharged the second it is medically safe to do so.
You can not buck the system.
