Family therapy in addiction treatment: Didn’t think it was important? It can be vital! Unless someone caught up in addiction has been living in the remote Amazonian jungle or living in a forest, it is very likely that their addiction is known within the family network and may have caused some strain within the dynamic of the family group. Some members of the family will be angry and dismissive, others desperate to try and rescue the individual while some may try and detox the person without recourse to healthcare professionals.
If you need help with alcohol addiction, 24-hour addiction advice, call for alcohol and drug treatment. Our clinicians are all experienced addictions professionals with many decades of experience within residential rehab and outpatient provision. All calls are confidential. Our advice is both free and impartial.
Family therapy is about recalibrating the family dynamic, exploring and putting into place appropriate boundaries that bolster recovery. Recovery can be a long and arduous process which both challenges and rewards along the way. Having the family network aligned to a positive recovery and continued abstinence will make a real contribution to the success.
In the UK it is estimated that one in every thirty-eight adult’s lives are affected, directly, by someone else’s addiction: Brother, husband, wife, partner, parent, child, niece, nephew: it matters not. An addiction can ravage family life, even when the family do not all live in the same house. Tension within family networks may not have been ignited by addiction, though this added element can put fuel to the fire.
Recalibrating the family dynamic is a critical link in the chain of recovery. Not only does it focus and repair the impact of addiction on the family network but also enhances the trajectory of recovery. It can also help to reduce the risk of relapse while supporting everyone in the family group to reconnect.
What happens during a family therapy session?
All sessions are led by an experienced and qualified family therapist. Depending on their qualifications they are regulated by various national bodies. Often, the therapist, themselves, has been in recovery for many years. While everyone who is in treatment has unique experiences of addiction, there are many common experiences. Having that unique experience can be invaluable. A skilled family therapist will be able to help those attending to manage emotions and foster an air of understanding and empathy. There is no judgement, just a desire to help the family heal and recover. Family therapy in addiction treatment may be a daunting thought but the process can be instrumental in recovery.
What type of emotions come up during a session?
Helplessness: It is not just the person caught up in addiction who can harbour feelings of not being able to cope, but it can also affect those around them. While there is a desire to help, lacking the right skills to do so can make the problem worse.
Shame: Being anxious about the reaction of others can be impactful.
Fear: Often, those caught up in addiction can put themselves at significant risk, and it is common for this fear to transfer to family members who also fear about the future of the person.
Guilt: It can be some years before family members start to identify that a loved one is caught up in addiction. Sometimes they feel that, if they had recognised the situation earlier, they could have prevented it.
Anger: Family members can demonstrate anger, not just towards themselves for not being able to rescue the person but also to the loved one caught up in it.

What are the benefits of family therapy?
- Understanding the causes: In recovery, you will learn all about the cause of addiction and its impact, but having to explain this to family members can be difficult. A skilled family therapist will help them to understand, not only the root causes of the addiction, but also triggers that can both aggravate it and be a risk of relapse.
- Taking stock: Recovery is not a quick process. Having the support of your family can be transformational providing the support is not from a place of judgement or control. Family therapy also helps the person in recovery to take account of their illness and be responsible for their abstinence and healing.
- Processing behaviours that enable: With the best intentions, family members can unwittingly empower an addiction by giving money or wrongly pitched emotional support. Family therapy works to identify where these behaviours occur and to set boundaries that will foster and boost recovery.
- Enhance communication: Addiction can place extreme stress on a family which can lead to those within in to feel ignored, that their voice is not being heard, all of which can lead to outbursts of anger. Family therapy is all about healing and recovery where these emotions can be worked through and clear channels of communication defined.
