What is Crack Cocaine?
Crack is the name given to cocaine when it is heated. The popping sound is similar to a crack: Hence the name. When it is produced in this way, it will give a far faster euphoric effect. Starting to come to notice in the 1980’s in the USA, it was recognised by American health officials in 1986 as a separate drug. It is either smoked or injected: Sometimes with heroin (known as speed balling.)
Is there any difference between crack and ordinary cocaine?
Scientifically there is no difference between the two. However, when you mix cocaine with baking soda (as well as water ) and heat it up the process removes hydrochloride. This “frees the base” which allows a rock like form to emerge. In the early days of the 1980’s it was known as free based cocaine.
How Is Crack Used?
While cocaine is usually snorted or injected whereas crack is smoked: but not in a cigarette. It is heated up in a “utensil “pipe” , usually a small alcohol miniature and when heated, the vapor produces an intense high. Crack can not be rubbed on the gums as powdered cocaine can.
Sometimes it is heated up on kitchen foil with a lighter held underneath. Occasionally, people use crack by inserting it into their back passage.
What Does Crack Do To The Body?
Crack produces a very short acting extreme euphoric rush. Your level of alertness will be very intense as will your sexual urges. As crack is a stimulant, your appetite will be significantly supressed.
Because crack is a stimulant it increases both your heart rate and blood pressure. This means that your heart will be working much harder than it should be and the flow of blood to your heart is significantly reduced. This means you can experienced a heart attack, coma, seizure or death.

Similarly you may also experience the following:
- Extreme aggression
 - Chronic restlessness
 - Uncontrollable anxiety
 - Seizures
 - Pressured speech
 - Dilated pupils
 - Poor/no appetite
 - Chronic insomnia
 - Dangerously raised body temperature
 - Severe nausea
 - Intense cravings
 - Stroke
 - Feeling of bugs under the skin

If I Stop Using Will I Experience Withdrawals?
Yes, and they will not be pleasant. When you use cocaine you alter your brain chemistry. All drugs, medications and alcohol work on receptors in the brain, either to open/close or partially open or close chemical channels. Cocaine is no different though it affects several different receptors causing a multitude of problems when you stop using it. As with all drugs, medication and alcohol, if you have been using it for a period of time your brain adjusts to it’s presence. When you stop using it you are forcing your brain to make an immediate adjustment: It can’t so hence the withdrawals.
It has nothing to do with “flushing toxins” out of your system or willpower: It is a matter of science. The symptoms of crack withdrawal can include:
- Extreme agitation
 - Severe irritability
 - Rapid onset depression
 - Long periods of sleep
 - Uncontrollable appetite
 - Chronic muscle aches

How Long Does Crack Withdrawal Last?
There are four recognised stages of crack withdrawal:
- Initial Phase: This can start immediately, up until the end of the first 24 hours. This is when the irritability begins, your mood drops and you get very anxious. Your appetite will be uncontrollable until your brain can readjust.
 - Acute Withdrawal Phase: This is sometimes known as the crash phase and can last up until a week after you last used. Usually, symptoms peak at the end of this phase. Your sleep will be disrupted and you will experience very severe fatigue as well as continuing anxiety and irritability. Your mood will continue to be low and there will be overwhelming cravings for crack.
 - Extended Withdrawal Phase: Lasting up to two weeks after you stop using, you may experience some paranoia as well as not being able to enjoy social activities. Your anxiety may still be an issue though things should start to get better.
 - Post Acute Withdrawal Phase: This can last for months and you can experience ongoing cravings as well as continued low mood, anxiety and inability to feel pleasure.

Crack Cocaine Detox
Unlike alcohol or heroin there is no medical detox for cocaine. There are medications, however, there are medications that can be prescribed in rehab to help you through the worst of the withdrawals. Helping to control your anxiety, blood pressure and sleep regulation will make the process of recovery easier.
This type of medication is usually given on an “as and when” basis so you do not become dependent on it.
Why Do I Need Rehab For Crack?
The withdrawals from crack can be very distressing: Not just for you but for those around you. While your loved ones and friends have the best intentions, they will simply not be equipped to help you when you are in the grips of cravings. People who try and recover at home usually succumb to cravings. It is nothing to do with willpower (or the lack of it) but science.
Crack Cocaine Addiction Rehab
Using medication provided in rehab, together with the support of an addictions clinician, the therapy team, support staff (usually in active recovery themselves) and peers in treatment will stand you in much better stead.
What Are The Benefits Of Rehab?
Addiction is a very serious illness that claims lives. It is an equal opportunities illness. Addiction doesn’t care if you are a zero hours shelf stacker or the CEO of a billion pound company. Black, white, gay, straight, trans, disabled: It really does not discriminate.
People use drugs for a reason. Sometimes to escape the reality around them or because they have unresolved psychological trauma and/or untreated mental health conditions. When you can develop an understanding as to why you are using drugs, deal with unresolved trauma and get help for untreated mental health issues then you are on the road to recovery.

Trying to deal with cravings at home won’t work, most of the time. Treatment at home is available but it is usually more expensive than rehab. Forget locking yourself in a room with a bucket, some water and toilet roll: It is the stuff of legends. When you experience cravings your brains tolerance to cocaine will have reduced. This puts you at extreme risk of overdose as you are likely to use more than normal to try and stabilise. People die when this happens.
