Home detox is where you are able to detox from alcohol and drugs in the comfort of your own home.
Instead of going into a rehab centre, you can recover in familiar surrondings.
For those who run a business it means that you can continue to do what you need to do while being treated.
Home detox is not available for all situations.
When it is suitable it means that, within reason, you can carry on with your normal day to day activities though there are some restrictions such as driving and operating heavy machinery for the first few days, due to safety.
For those whose need is greater, it is possible to have 24/7 live in specialist nursing care with a addiction specialist consultant psychiatrist overseeing your care.
Each case is treated on it's own merits.

A home alcohol detox is usually reserved for those for whom the clinicial risk is considered low to medium.
You are welcome to call and speak with one of our clinicians who will advise you if you are suitable for treatment: Not everyone is. It may also be that you don't need a detox.
If you have a detox when you don't need one it is actually damaging to your health.
The medication you take for detox replaces alcohol on the same receptors in your brain that alcohol works on.
If you don't need a detox the medication will make you very drowsy and could lead to a medical emergency.
If you are alcohol dependent and require a detox, you may be able to have an at home alcohol detox without live in 24/7 care providing:
* You drink less than 30 units a day
* Have not had a detox within the last six months
* No history of alcohol withdrawal related seizures
* Free of significant drug use
* Be in good general health
* Absence of certain prescribed medications
* Have an adult able to supervise you 24/7
This will cost between £1,700 and £1,850
What does a low-medium risk home alcohol detox assessment consist of?
If your clinical risk is deemed low to medium you will be assessed by your treating clinician.
He or she will take a medical history from you and will ask you questions about your general health as well as your drinking.
They will need to know:
* What you drink
* How much you drink a day
* How long you have been drinking for
* Last episode of treatment (if applicable)
* Prescribed medication
* Any history of alcohol releated withdrawal seizures
* Underlying conditions
* Any history of deliberate overdoses/suicidal thinking
Does my GP need to know if I am having a home detox?
As addiction clinicians we always advise you to inform your GP.
We understand, however, why you may be reluctant to do so.
It is up to your clinician to decide if they will take you on for treatment if you do not wish to provide your GP details.
One workaround is for you to get a medical summary from your surgery.
These are always free and the receptionist can help you.
Modern day NHS GP computer systems allow for a medical summary to be printed with minimal key strokes.
You do not have to tell the practice why you want a medical summary.
*NB: We always advise anyone seeking any private treatment to fully involve their GP.
How does a home detox work?
If you are able to access a detox for low-medium risk alcohol dependency the process is quite straightforward.
You will be assessesed by an addictions specialist consultant psychiatrist or a GP with special interest in addictions, both of whom will be on the General Medical Council register as having additional training in addictions.
They will assess you, usually over video conferencing and may want to speak with an adult who is going to be staying with you for the first few days (known as a support buddy).
During the consultation the Doctor will be asking questions so they can get a clear picture of your needs and how best they can help you.
If they agree to take you on as a patient they will arrange for medication to be delivered to you.
You simply stop drinking the night before you start your detox (you need to be in the early stages of withdrawal or the medication will mix with the alcohol which is dangerous).
You will be given very clear instructions on what medication to take and when.
There will be information on what to do in the very unlikely event of a problem and whom to contact.
Your support buddy will be given a whole raft of information on how to monitor you and what do to if they have any concerns.
You will need a blood pressure machine which you can buy from a chemist/supermarker or online for under £20.
There will be a monitoring form to fill in by your support buddy. This means that your clinician, when reviewing your care, can quickly assess your progress and if any tweaks are needed to your medication regime.
What if I am deemed high risk: Can I still have treatment at home?
Yes, within certain perameters.
Each case is treated on it's own merits.
The deciding factor is, always, your safety.
It doesn't matter how much money you can afford to spend, if your clinical need is higher than that which can be treated at home it will not be possible to get a home detox.
A home detox is not simply something you can purchase by mail order. It is a significant medical treatment.
Treatment at home for a high risk patient means 24/7 live in specialist nursing care with a consultant psychiatrist (addiction specialist) overseeing your care and a GP addiction specialist having day to day responsibility for your progresss.
You may be able to have treatment at home, with this enhanced provision, for a much wider range of issues including:
* Opioids
* Sleeping pills
* GHB/GBL
* Ketamine
* Heroin
* Pain killers
* Amphetamines
* Pregabalin/Gabapentin
* Benzodiazepines (after a reduction agreed with your GP/consultant)
Why is residential treatment more beneficial?
Effective treatment for addiction requires four elements:
* Detox (where needed)
* Group therapy
* Relapse prevention
* Aftercare
A standalone detox, at home, without the other three elements will not prepare you, adequately, for sobriety.
Infact, a standalone detox can actually make things worse.
People often take to drink and drugs to blot out painful memories.
Alcohol, will reduce your stress for an hour or so but, in time, you will need more and more to have the same effect as the amount you started with.
When you detox, because the alcohol and drugs are no longer on your brain receptors suppressing difficult thoughts and emotions, they will come back into play.
If you haven't been able to process these thoughts and deal with any underlying mental health concerns your brain is going to tell you what you already know: Going back to using drugs and alcohol will make them go away.
Without relapse prevention skills you will not be able to handle difficult situations and a relapse is highly likely.
All centres offer a minimum of a years aftercare.
This is, usually, access to a weekly support group, either in person or by video conferencing is distance is an issue.

Wouldn't I be better off in a well known chain of private mental health hospitals for addiction treatment?

While you would have a consultant psychiatrist in charge of your care, the treatment plan and process is exactly the same as any other rehab centre:
* Detox
* Group therapy
* Relapse prevention
* Aftercare
The only difference is that you would be seen by the consultant in ward round once a week.
In a private hospital the same rules apply:
You must atttend all groups and meetings, on time. The medication you would recieve, if applicable, would be exactly the same and the nursing/support worker care would also be identical. Being in a private hospital doesn't mean any difference in the treatment process.
You are paying for a brand. If you opt for a lower cost centre the same treatment plan can be accessed for £6,950.

Call UsHow long do I need in rehab to recover from addiction?
The amount of time you will need in rehab determines the cost.
Unlike booking a holiday, the time you can book for, as a minimum, depends entirely on your clinical need.
For an example, if you are heavily dependent on alcohol and need a medication assisted detox, this will take an absolute minimum of seven to ten days.
Again, it depends on a number of factors but, usually, can not be negotiated.
Your safety is the absolute priority.
Clients who are opioid dependent, for example, will require a longer admission. Rapid detoxing is unsafe and no reputable centre would offer one.
A rapid detox puts you at very significant risk as you would leave rehab in withdrawal with no tolerance to opioids. The risk is that you would try and relieve your withdrawals with an amount of opioids you feel will settle you.
Invariably, this amount would lead to overdose.
The same applies to benzodiazpeines and a number of other substances.
Do some people need more than 28 days?
The therapy programme in recovery is a revolving process.
It doesn't mattter if you get admitted on a Monday or a Sunday.
Those who stay more than a week usually recieve a weekly session of individual therapy.
Nearly a hundred years of rehab research shows that group therapy is the most effective treatment approach.
If you think you are not the kind of person that would benefit from group therapy then you absoultely are the kind of person that will!
The reason that some people need more than 28 days is because some drug dependencies can take more than 28 days to detox from. A good example being benzodiazepines.
However, if you work with your GP/consultant, you can taper down at home and then enter into residential treatment for the final furlong.
Can I not just go "Cold Turkey?" to avoid the cost of home detox?
No.
Alcohol and/or drugs affect receptors in your brain just as prescribed medication does.
If you keep drinking/taking drugs the brain will make adjustments to try and protect itself.
This is known as tolerance.
As a result, you will need to take ever increasing amounts to have the same effect as the amount you started with.
If you stop drinking or taking drugs (or reduce too quickly) your brain simply can not adjust that quickly.
As your brain scrabbles to adjust incorrect chemical messaging occurs.
This is what causes the phyical symptoms known as withdrawal.
Without the correct medical intervention and medication you can experience an extreme medical emergency: Very quickly.
Sadly, in some cases, it can be fatal.
Forget what you see in films and on television.
Locking yourself away with some bottles of water, a bucket and a toilet roll just won't cut it.
Even if you were able to make it through the physical withdrawals, your brain will tell you what you already know: The only way to overcome the cravings is to take the substance you stopped taking.
The problem is that your brain will not be able to process the substance as it did before you stopped.
Your tolerance has gone.
You will take an amount you think you need to settle yourself but are very likely to take an accidental overdose.
Hollywood may depict paramedics administering reversal agents and people immediately waking up: This simply doesn't happen in a lost of cases.
For a lot of drugs, there is no reversal agent. Treatment consists of monitoring, oxgen and keeping your airway open then crossing fingers and hoping for the best.
