Just as when you take prescribed medication or even hayfever tablets in a supermarket, they work on receptors in your brain.
They are designed either to activate or deactive chemical channels so that a desired effect is achieved.
When you take drugs, precisely the same thing happens.
If you take drugs consistently your brain will, in time, become used to them being on the receptors and makes changes to accomodate them.
This is known as tolerance.
The problem is, that when this happens, because the brain has rewired you will need ever increasing amounts of the drug in order to have the same effect as when you started.
Not only can this lead to overdose but if you stop taking the drug, or reduce too quickly, the brain simply can not cope with the immediate change.
As your brain scrabbles to adjust incorrect chemical messaging occurs throughout the body.
This is what causes the symptoms known as withdrawal.
Detox alone won't work.
Indeed a detox, without the other essential elements:
* Group therapy
* Relapse prevention
* aftercare
Is very likely to fail.
Actually, you can even make the problem worse.
People often start taking drugs in order to escape their problems: Work stress, relationship difficulties, business issues, stress, depression, anxiety, etc.
When you stop taking drugs your brain can no longer suppress those difficult emotions and thoughts you were suppressing.
If you don't address these underlying issues a rapid relapse is very much on the cards.
Can't I just go "Cold Turkey"?
No.
Withdrawal, even from opioids, without medical intervention, can be fatal.
There is no nice way to dress it up.
Forget what you see on the TV and in the movies.
Locking yourself in a room with some toilet roll, a bucket and some bottled water is not going to work.
When you stop taking the drugs your brain has been used to it will signal to you that the only way you can stop the withdrawals is to use again.
In rehab you will get the substitute medication necessary to overcome withdrawals as well as the psychlogical support needed.
On your own you are very likely to not be able to overcome the cravings.
Within a few hours of stopping drugs (or if you reduce too quickly) your brain simply can't cope with the immediate change.
While it scrabbles around to fix the problem it sends out incorrect chemical messaging. This is what causes the symptoms known as withdrawal.
Your brain will also, very quickly, reduce it's ability to deal with drugs on receptors.
This means that if you try and treat yourself at home your brain tells you what you know: If you retake the drug you stopped taking you will feel better.
You are going to take an amount you feel with stop your withdrawals.
The problem is that because your brain can no longer process the amount you were previously taking, you are now at risk of an overdose.
If you overdose at home, even if there is someone there to help you, you may experience a very significant medical episode. Many people die because of overdose.
For some drugs there is no known reversal agent and treatment is merely supportive (oxygen, monitoring, etc).
Why do different substances require different amounts of time in rehab?
Different drugs work on different receptors in the brain. This has a direct effect on the time it takes to recover.
For example, Cocaine withdrawal is very short lived and there is no "detox" though some people benefit from supportive medication in the first couple of days.
For those who are very heavily dependent on Cocaine, medication to lower the heart rate and blood pressure as well as to reduce stress and improve sleep can be invaluable.
On the other end of the spectrum are drugs such as Benzodiazepines.
These take far, far longer to safely withdraw form.
There is no substitute so a reduction plan, usually with a long acting Benzodiazepine, is used. This can take many months (so a reduction plan is usually put in place in the community with residential treatment coming at the end.)
The amount of time it takes to safely detox depends on several factors:

The amount of time you will need in rehab determines the cost.
Unlike booking a holiday, the time you can book for, as a minimum, depends entirely on your clinical need.
For an example, if you are heavily dependent on alcohol and need a medication assisted detox, this will take an absolute minimum of seven to ten days.
Again, it depends on a number of factors but, usually, can not be negotiated.
Your safety is the absolute priority.
Clients who are opioid dependent, for example, will require a longer admission. Rapid detoxing is unsafe and no reputable centre would offer one.
A rapid detox puts you at very significant risk as you would leave rehab in withdrawal with no tolerance to opioids. The risk is that you would try and relieve your withdrawals with an amount of opioids you feel will settle you.
Invariably, this amount would lead to overdose.
The same applies to benzodiazpeines and a number of other substances.
What is the lowest cost for a week?
Mild alcohol and stimulant (cocaine) dependency can be addressed with a combination of residential and outpatient recovery.
No centre would accept you for less than a week.
A seven day admission can be achieved from as little as £1,975 a week.
This includes everything you need for a safe detox:

For those seeking treatment at home, we always advise clients to seek residential treatment as it is inherently safer and often far less expensive.
Why do all centres reccomend a 28 day programme?
Detox, alone, is only one element of recovery from addiction.
Your brain will not start to absorb the essential elements of therapy, relapse prevention and aftercare until it has returned to a more normal level of functioning.
Some people can starts groups on their first day, others may need to wait a day or two due to the physical effects of detox.
All centres follow a gradiated therapy programme: Either a 12 step, SMART or eclectic approach.
This means that, when following the programme, there will be elements completed along the way.
28 days gives you the opportunity to make very significant progress in your recovery.
That, in no way, means that your treatment ends when you leave.
Rehab is only the very beginning of the process. It gives you the springboard you need to achieve long term recovery.
Do some people need more than 28 days?
The therapy programme in recovery is a revolving process.
It doesn't mattter if you get admitted on a Monday or a Sunday.
Those who stay more than a week usually recieve a weekly session of individual therapy.
Nearly a hundred years of rehab research shows that group therapy is the most effective treatment approach.
If you think you are not the kind of person that would benefit from group therapy then you absoultely are the kind of person that will!
The reason that some people need more than 28 days is because some drug dependencies can take more than 28 days to detox from. A good example being benzodiazepines.
However, if you work with your GP/consultant, you can taper down at home and then enter into residential treatment for the final furlong.
