The first thing to understand is that an initial assessment with any provider is always free.
No one will ever ask for payment for an initial assessment.
As for how much your treatment will cost depends on a number of factors, of which clinical safety is the overriding factor.
Depending on your addiction, the shortest possible admission time must take into account a safe detox (where necessary).
There are high end options, if you want them, but you really don't need to spend a lot of money.
All you need to recover from addiction is four things:
* A safe and medically supervised detox with the appropriate medicatio
* Group therapy
Relapse prevention skills
*Aftercare
All centres offer detox and rehab combined.
Standalone detox is not safe, not recommended or available.
This can be achieved without breaking the bank.

There are multiple factors that determine the cost of rehab:
* The location of the centre: A centre in the west end of London is going to cost far more to run than one in rural Wales!
* Length of stay: The therapy programme in residential rehab is a rolling programme which you can join on a Sunday just as you can on Wednesday so when you are admitted is not important. However, your detox needs determine the minimum amount of time you can be admitted for. This will never be less than a week and is usally 14-28 days.
* Detox: The detox regime planning is a collaboration between you and your clinician. However, there are certain aspects over which the clinician has to have the final say. For example, an opiod detox is usually a minimum of 28 days. It can be shorter in exceptional circumstances. An alcohol detox is usually 10-14 days but can be a week. It depends on a number of factors.
* Private room: You can reduce costs if you are happy to share with someone of the same sex.
* Treatment intensity: All centres, the world over from the lowest cost to the most high end run on a group therapy approach. All clients have to attend all meetings and groups: There are no exceptions. Higher end centres offer a weekly individual therapy session and family therapy. It is usually possible to engage the therapist, privately, for continued therapy post discharge.
* Psychiatric support: Higher end centres have consultant psychiatrist (addiction specialists) on the staff who can give oversight to your care.
* Medication: Higher end centres can provide adjunctive medication that may be useful, post discharge, to help with cravings. These are not available on the NHS.
* Aftercare: All centres offer a minimum
What is the difference in the programmes for the different lengths of stay?
The shortest period of treatment you can access is 7 days.
Currently, there are only a very small handful of indepedently run centres that will accomodate you for seven days and only if your detox can be completed within that time (if you need one)
Below we list the difference in treatment programmes:
* 7 days: This is the shortest treatment programme available for those who do not need a detox of for those who are mildly alcohol and/or cocaine dependent.
You will be welcomed into the therapy groups and meetings but won't be able to access individual therapy as you are only there for a week.
While you will have a good introduction to the graded group therapy process your trajectory along the gradients is to going to be very minimal. However anytime spent sober and abstinent is a massive move forward.
Access will be given to the weekly aftercare group but it would be unlikely you would be able to access the relapse prevention skills groups due to time.
*14 days: This is the usual amount of time for those dependent on alcohol for a safe detox. If you need a 14 day detox you might not be able to access the therapy groups for a day or two as you may be more comfortable resting in your room (under medical supervision).
* 21 days: This might be suitable for mild opioid dependency and more dependent alcohol clients. You will be able to progress along the gradiated group therapy progress and complete some of the steps.
*28 days: Usually the minimum amount of time for opioid clients. This amount of time in groups allows for a very significant amount of progression as well as being able to gain lots of relapse prevention skills and benefit from weekly individual therapy
*90 days: Required for heavily dependent opioid and/or benzodiazepine clients. This is due to the way the brain responds to detox and the inherent risks associated with rapid detoxing.
Why do different substances require different amounts of time in rehab?
When you drink alcohol and/or take drugs they sit on receptors in your brain just as prescribed medication is invented to do.
After a period of time, the receptors become used to the prescence of the substance: This is known as tolerance.
As a result the brain will adjust the way it works. This is why, for example, if you are alchol dependent you need more and more alcohol to have the same effect as the amount you first started with.
If you stop suddenly, or reduce too quickly, the brain can not cope with the immediate change. While it scrambles to adjust it sends out incorrect chemical messaging: This is what causes the symptoms known as withdrawal.
Below we have listed some of the drug specific costs for residential rehab (detox, therapy, relapse prevention and aftercare):
* Alcohol: 7 days minimum starting at £1,975
* Cocaine: There is no detox for cocaine though medication may be needed to safely adjust to not taking it. This can, usually, be done in 7 days starting at £1,975
* Heroin: Usually, this requires a minimum of a month in rehab. Rapid heroin detox is very dangerous because it leaves you in withdrawal with no tolerance to opioids and very prone to accidental overdose. A months residential treatment starts at: £6,950
* Benzodiazepines: A benzodiazepine detox is, probably, the most complex of admissions. Due to the way the drug works it can take many months, sometimes a year to safely detox. The most cost effective way to detox from benzodiazepines is to reduce in the community with the help of your GP/consultant and then go into rehab for the last part. This would, normally, be 28 days starting at £6,950
*Prescription medication/antidepressants: This is wholly dependent on what it is you are taking, how much, by which route and how long for (among other things). Centres will only accept you with the full knowledge of your prescribing clinician in the community. It could be anything from a week to 28 days.
How much does rehab cost if I stay 28 days?
A 28 day admission can be achieved for as little as £6,950
This includes all the essential elements needed:
* Medication assisted/medically supervised detox
* Seven day a week group therapy
* Weekly individual therapy session
* Relapse prevention skills training/development
* After for a minimum of 12 months post discharge
* Full hotel services: Meals, housekeeping, etc

What is the difference between a low cost rehab centre and a high end one?
In terms of recovery?
Absolutelty nothing!
There are only four essential elements to recovery from addiction
* Detox
* Group therapy
* Relapse prevention skills
* Aftercare
The best way to think about it is to compare it to booking a flight.
If you book a seat in economy you will get to the destination at the same time as someone in first class.
The same outcome is achieved: You get to where you wanted to get to but the experience in getting there may be different.
If the flight is delayed by poor weather or the plane late to arrive for you to board by tecnical issues everyone is inconvienianced: No matter if you turn left or right when you get on.
Both provide the essentials but the more expensive option has some bolt on's which aren't essential but a nice touch.
The same can be said for rehab.
Sure, you can spend a lot more money and have organic freshly pressed carrot juice, do yoga with a minature goat and chant shakras. None of which will make any difference to your recovery.

While you would have a consultant psychiatrist in charge of your care, the treatment plan and process is exactly the same as any other rehab centre:
* Detox
* Group therapy
* Relapse prevention
* Aftercare
The only difference is that you would be seen by the consultant in ward round once a week.
In a private hospital the same rules apply:
You must atttend all groups and meetings, on time. The medication you would recieve, if applicable, would be exactly the same and the nursing/support worker care would also be identical. Being in a private hospital doesn't mean any difference in the treatment process.
You are paying for a brand. If you opt for a lower cost centre the same treatment plan can be accessed for £6,950.
What are the costs in various centres?
In the UK there are centres that are independently run and those that are part of a chain.
Independently run centres tend to be less expensive that chain run centres.

The amount of time you will need in rehab determines the cost.
Unlike booking a holiday, the time you can book for, as a minimum, depends entirely on your clinical need.
For an example, if you are heavily dependent on alcohol and need a medication assisted detox, this will take an absolute minimum of seven to ten days.
Again, it depends on a number of factors but, usually, can not be negotiated.
Your safety is the absolute priority.
Clients who are opioid dependent, for example, will require a longer admission. Rapid detoxing is unsafe and no reputable centre would offer one.
A rapid detox puts you at very significant risk as you would leave rehab in withdrawal with no tolerance to opioids. The risk is that you would try and relieve your withdrawals with an amount of opioids you feel will settle you.
Invariably, this amount would lead to overdose.
The same applies to benzodiazpeines and a number of other substances.
What is the lowest cost for a week?
Mild alcohol and stimulant (cocaine) dependency can be addressed with a combination of residential and outpatient recovery.
No centre would accept you for less than a week.
A seven day admission can be achieved from as little as £1,975 a week.
This includes everything you need for a safe detox:
* Medical supervision
* Prescribed detox medication
* Hotel services (full catering, housekeeping,etc)
* Group therapy
* Relapse prevention
*Aftercare
For those seeking treatment at home, we always advise clients to seek residential treatment as it is inherently safer and often far less expensive.
Why do all centres reccomend a 28 day programme?
Detox, alone, is only one element of recovery from addiction.
Your brain will not start to absorb the essential elements of therapy, relapse prevention and aftercare until it has returned to a more normal level of functioning.
Some people can starts groups on their first day, others may need to wait a day or two due to the physical effects of detox.
All centres follow a gradiated therapy programme: Either a 12 step, SMART or eclectic approach.
This means that, when following the programme, there will be elements completed along the way.
28 days gives you the opportunity to make very significant progress in your recovery.
That, in no way, means that your treatment ends when you leave.
Rehab is only the very beginning of the process. It gives you the springboard you need to achieve long term recovery.
Do some people need more than 28 days?
The therapy programme in recovery is a revolving process.
It doesn't mattter if you get admitted on a Monday or a Sunday.
Those who stay more than a week usually recieve a weekly session of individual therapy.
Nearly a hundred years of rehab research shows that group therapy is the most effective treatment approach.
If you think you are not the kind of person that would benefit from group therapy then you absoultely are the kind of person that will!
The reason that some people need more than 28 days is because some drug dependencies can take more than 28 days to detox from. A good example being benzodiazepines.
However, if you work with your GP/consultant, you can taper down at home and then enter into residential treatment for the final furlong.
