What are the statistics on addiction treatment Lincolnshire?
Most counties and borough councils publish data on drug and alcohol use every five years as part of their public health strategy.
Normally, information on small cities and towns are contained within wider stastisics for the wider county area.
The last set of data was published by the county council in 2025 as part of a needs assessment.
Facts and figures addiction treatment Lincolnshire
Lincolnshire is a large, rural county with an estimated population of 775,524 in 2022.
The
county has a diverse geography with large rural and agricultural areas, urban areas and
market towns and a long Eastern coastline.
The population density in the county is just
129 persons per square kilometre.
In the reporting period June 2023- May 2024 there were 818,315 people registered to a GP
in Lincolnshire, however some of these may live outside Lincolnshire.
Within this
population, 34,373 people have a known substance use issue.
Lincoln has the highest rate of substance users in Lincolnshire with 55 per 1000
population, closely followed by East Lindsey with 48 per 1000 while the remaining
districts share a very similar rate from 36-41.
The rate of substance use in Lincolnshire varies significantly based on levels of
socioeconomic deprivation.
Using the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD), a measure that
ranks areas from the most to the least deprived (from 1 to 10, where 1 is the most deprived
and 10 is the least), we can see that substance use is generally higher in more deprived
areas.
Lincolnshire’s Joint Strategic Needs Assessment states that there is
a concentrated demand for drugs in Lincoln, Boston, Skegness, and Grantham.
In 2022,
Lincolnshire Police estimated that there were 40,809 drug users aged 16-59 in
Lincolnshire.
Only an estimated half of adults that use opiates and cocaine in Lincolnshire are in
contact with specialist treatment services (48%).
This is significantly better than the
England average where only an estimated 43% are engaged in specialist treatment.
Where records are available, access to treatment for some marginalised groups is
comparable to the national average (e.g., LGBTQ++).
Overall, access for ethnic groups is
low, but higher in Boston, due to the areas diverse population, than the county
demographics.
The rate of substance use by ten-year age groups in Lincolnshire show the most common
ages fall in the mid-adult range.
The highest rate is in the 40-49 group with 69, closely
followed by 30-39 with 64 and 50-59 with 60 per 1000.
Those below 20 and above 70 are
less likely to be substance users.
Only 20% of the population report not drinking at all.
The most recent data for
Lincolnshire (2015-2018) is relatively outdated but, at that time, 12.9% of people reported
abstaining from drinking.
Over the same time period, 1 in 6 adults reported binge drinking,
and 1 in 5 drinking more than the CMO’s low-risk guidelines.
An estimated 7190 adults are alcohol dependent in Lincolnshire. Around 13% of the
estimated numbers of adults who are alcohol dependent in Lincolnshire access In 2023/24, there was a total of 1698 new presentations for treatment in Lincolnshire.
People who enter specialist treatment for alcohol use has been increasing since 2020
and saw the highest number of new presentations (754 new clients, 80.2% of total in
treatment) followed by non-opiates (264 new clients, 74.6% of total in treatment).
Anecdotal information from the treatment service is that there is an increase in
complexity with the people that are presenting to services with poly drug use and
complex alcohol dependency among the disclosed substances used.
The increase in
numbers of people entering treatment with more complex issues was seen during the
pandemic and has continued in the years since.

While there are no centres directly in Lincolshire, there are a number of low cost (and high end) centers very close by.
Companies advertise that they do but, in reality, there aren't any directly in the county.
Drug and alcohol services in Lincolnshire, provided by the council, are focused on crime reduction.
They will provide methadone/Buprenorphine for opioid addiction, psychosocial support for cocaine addiction and community home detox for mild alcohol dependency only within a strict framework.
