What are the statistics on addiction treatment Bristol?

Usually, for a small city statistics are contained in  wider reports for the county.

However, Bristol city council does publish it's own statistics.

It is very unusual for a city council to publish yearly figures. They are mostly published every five years.

The proportion of Bristol residents using drugs is relatively small, but the impact is extensive.

Bristol has an estimated 5,435 opiate and/or crack users. Whilst the proportion of Bristol residents using drugs is relatively small the impact can be extensive.

Bristol has the second largest estimated rate of opiate and/or crack users (per 1,000 population) of the English core cities  and the largest proportion of very high complexity clients which makes them more likely to be in treatment for longer and need specific support.

In line with national trends, the number of new clients with opiate issues is gradually reducing; however with an ageing population of opiate users in treatment, this presents different challenges. Clients in treatment.

Clients in treatment are the number of people in contact with specialist substance use services, and who access treatment for either problematic drug use, alcohol use or both.

During 2024/25 there were 2,365 clients in treatment for opiate use, 865 for alcohol use, 785 for non-opiate and alcohol use and 485 for non-opiate use only.

Bristol deaths from drugs use per 100,000 remains significantly higher than the national rate. For the period 2022-24, there were 10.3 per 100,000 deaths from drug use in Bristol, compared to 5.8 per 100,000 nationally (Figure 5).

Bristol is not statistically significant when compared to similar English Core Cities which range from 13.9 in Liverpool to 7.8 in Nottingham and Sheffield.

What are the benefits of addiction treatment Bristol?

Detox on it's on will not prevent a relapse. If you don't understand why you were using in the first place, you will go back to the one thing you know stiffles the emotional pain you experience: drugs and alcohol.

Therapy lifts the lid on those difficult thoughts, emotions and memories you have been suppressing with drugs and alcohol. These are the reasons you drink and take drugs.

It can help you deal with your underlying anxiety, low mood and address other unresolved issues. You don't need to believe in God or follow any religion to go into group therapy.

Every centre, the world over, uses a group therapy model, whether it is a 12 step one or not.

If you think you are not the kind of person who can open up in a group or that group therapy won't work for you then you are precisely the kind of person who will benefit from it.

Nearly every centre provides a weekly session of individual therapy in addition to group therapy.

Relapse prevention
gives you the emotional resillience to be able to work through stressful situations you will face when yo go home.

People relapse: Fact. If you accept that addiction is a chronic illness just like diabetes and asthma you will appreciate that relapse is part of the disease process.

Relapse is an opportunity to test your skills.

Aftercare means regular telephone check in with your rehab centre team, a weekly support group (in person or online) and a dedicated number to call if you need urgent support.

What about treatment at home if I need addiction treatment Bristol?

Possibly.

Home detox is available for a limited range of conditions, mainly uncomplicated/low threshold alcohol dependency, intermittent cocaine use and mild cannabis dependency.

There are very strict national clinicial guidelines on home treatment and there is seldom any wriggle room.

Certain health conditions, prescribed medication and history of previous treatment may automatically exclude someone from home treatment.

Never use a home detox company that sends medication in the post. Most are trading illegally.

A home detox is just that and without the other elements that rehab provides:therapy, relapse prevention and aftercare, a relapse is very likely.

Often it is more cost effective to have a short residential treatment admission.

If home treatment is suitable for you and something you want to arrange, we can assist you.

Why do people need a detox when looking for addiction treatment Bristol?

When you use alcohol and drugs on a regular basis your brain becomes used to it. It will change the way it works to accomodate it.

After a time you reach a stage known as physiological tolerance. This means you need more and more to have the same effect as the amount you started with.

If you stop using suddenly, or reduce too quickly, your brain can not cope. While it scrabbles to readjust it will fire off incorrrect chemical messaging. It is this that causes symptoms known as withdrawal.

Without the correct medical intervention you can experience a very acute medical emergency or fatality.

Never try and treat this yourself at home.
