Low cost home alcohol detox.

Sounds like a good idea? Possibly.

Is it suitable for all? No.

Does it work for everyone: No . Will it cure my addiction: No. Is it always lower cost than going to a rehab centre? No.

Use our experience

Let our expert in house addictions clinicians guide you with some free advice on home alcohol detox.

It is something we get lots of enquiries about. For some people it is possible, but the exclusion criteria usually mean it is not possible.

Beware of bad actors

Most companies that offer it are doing so illegally and are, literally, just selling you pills in the post.

Often it no cheaper than going into a rehab center (and never as safe).

What is Alcohol Home Detox?

What it is and what it should be are two different things.

A planned intervention

A home alcohol detox should be a planned procedure, in collaboration with your GP where you have been assessed by an experienced addictions clinician who has access to your medical records (with your consent).

Arranging a support person

An adult, over the age of 18, will need to be with you for the whole process (and 24/7 for the first 48-72 hours).

A nurse or fully trained health care support worker will monitor you, at home, daily, for the first few days and at least twice daily for the first 48-72 hours.

Beware of cheap offerings

Sadly, most of the companies on the internet do not provide anywhere near this level of care.

They will provide a very brief telephone assessment, not necessarily with a doctor, and only after they have taken full payment.

Never buy pills in the post

Medication will then be sent to you, by courier and one of the sales staff will call you for the the first few days.

It is very unlikely they will have asked you to produce a medical summary from your GP and thus they have no idea what medication you are taking, which can be very risky.

Gaps between detox

Home detox should only be considered where someone has not had a detox within the last six months.

If you approach a private service, because it is unlikely they will ask for a medical summary people sometimes hide the fact that they have.

This puts you at very significant risk.

A detox should only commence once you are under a certain level of intoxication.

Enhanced safety in rehab

In a rehab centre, and with a properly medically managed home detox, a breathalyser test is used to determine this.

Without this test, it is likely you will commence medication before it is safe to do so and you run the risk of overdose: Alcohol and detox meds work on the same receptors.

Why Do Companies Provide Illegal Home Detox Services?

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) can not investigate everything.

These companies that sell these illegal services are web based and thus it is very difficult to track them down and investigate them.

Providing services without registration

The reason why they are illegal is a little complicated to explain:

If a doctor who is on the GMC register with additional training in addictions works in a regulated service they can, in their spare time, provide addiction services to private patients.

Exemptions

They do not need to register this out of hours work with the CQC. However, only a doctor can do this, not a nurse/pharmacist/paramedic prescriber who works in an addiction service.

A prescriber, who is not a doctor, such as a nurse, can set up a home detox company with CQC registration but, to date, this has not happened.

When a doctor provides this service aside from their full time role they must take payment, assess the patient, prescribe the medication and monitor the patient.

None of these elements can be hived off to another company.

Home detox companies will lure nurse prescribers in return for £200+ an hour and tell them that the service they are providing is legal.

Sadly, a lot of nurses fall for this as the remuneration is very good.

How Much Does it Cost?

Most home detox companies, providing illegal services, will charge at least £1,500.

For this all you will get is a 30 minute telephone call with a nurse, pills in the post and a sales person calling you for the first few days of the detox: That is it.

The medication costs less than £20. The nurse gets around £200. Not a bad margin!

What if Something Goes Wrong?

If something goes wrong with an illegal home detox: You are on your own.

You have no recourse as the company who sold you the pills will not take any responsibility.

They will clam up and not answer your calls.

They will not reveal the details of the staff you dealt with.

The CQC won’t be able to help you and trading standards will not be interested.

Who is Eligible For a Home Detox?

There are nationally recognised clinical standards for all procedures and home detox is no exception. Ordinarily you need to be:

  • Drinking less than 30 units a day
  • Not had a detox for at least six months
  • Not taking medication with is excluded (usually benzodiazepines, gabapentinoids, anti convulsants)
  • Free of a history of seizures (case by case basis)
  • Be in good general health and without liver damage (case by case basis)
  • Have an adult over the age of 18 to support 24/7 , at least for the first few days
  • Free of illegal drugs

Key Takeaways

  • Low Cost Home Alcohol Detox may not be suitable for everyone, and it does not guarantee recovery from addiction.
  • Beware of illegal services claiming to provide home detox; these often sell pills without proper medical supervision.
  • A proper home alcohol detox requires planning, medical assessments, and support from trained professionals.
  • Residential rehab offers more comprehensive support than home detox, including aftercare, therapy, and a safe environment.
  • If you need help with alcohol addiction, contact expert clinicians for free advice and treatment options.

Why Do People Who Have Home Detox Relapse?

Treating alcohol addiction at home rarely works.

You wouldn’t try and fix a broken leg at home and addiction is a very serious disease that claims lives.

Numbing emotions

When you detox from alcohol all the memories and emotions that the alcohol was suppressing are now at the front of your mind.

Trying to deal with these, plus alcohol cravings without professional input is a real risk.

Isn’t Rehab Very Expensive?

No.

There are centers that will provide residential rehab (including detox) for only slightly more than £1,500 a week.

You get far more out of residential treatment

For that you get the professional services of an experienced addictions clinician, trained medical staff on site, therapy groups and support staff.

Of course, there is also restaurant standard food and clean, safe and welcoming surroundings.

Can I go To a Rehab For a Week?

While most centres will not take anyone for less than two weeks, there are some centres that will take you for a week, if clinically viable.

For example, if the amount of alcohol you are drinking will require a detox that takes longer than a week then it would not be safe to do so. Many will take people for ten days.

What Aftercare Do I Get From Home Detox Companies?

On the whole: None.

Without aftercare relapse becomes more likely

They will call you, frequently, simply to try and sell you more pills or get you to book into a rehab centre, via them, for a very large commission. All rehab centres, even f you go for a week, will provide a minimum of a years aftercare.
