Why Do I Need a Detox?
When you alcohol/drugs for a period of time, your brain will adjust to their presence on receptors. Drugs and alcohol alter your brain chemistry , either to open up chemical channels, or close them down. Some act to partially open or close channels, but let’s keep it simple!
After a period of time using alcohol and/or drugs you will develop a tolerance. It is has nothing to do with trying to “flush toxins” out of your system: it is a matter of altered brain chemistry. Willpower is simply not enough. When you stop using your brain can not cope with the instant change. Depending on what you have been using, your body will react in different ways. For example, with heroin, you will experience symptoms that resemble a very bad case of flu as well as stomach problems. For alcohol, the symptoms range from dry retching to tremors, seizures and death.
Same Day At Home Detox
Forget what you read in novels or have seen in the movies: Locking someone in their bedroom to “go cold turkey” with a sick bucket, some water and roll of kitchen paper is, not only dangerous, but could render you liable to prosecution if something goes wrong.
Despite what most people think, there are numerous deaths associated with heroin withdrawal, mostly due to dehydration. Fatalities are also known among those who are dependent on sleeping pills and , especially: Ketamine.
How Does a Detox Work?
A detox works by replacing the substance you were using with something chemically similar and reducing it over an agreed period of time under medical supervision. There are national clinical guidelines on what medication to use in particular circumstances and pre-formatted detox regimes that are used to determine how long your detox will take and how much medication you will need. These things, however, are not set in stone and sometimes amendments are needed to a treatment plan.
Can my GP Prescribe Detox Medication?
No. Due to the way NHS GP services are commissioned, your GP can not prescribe these medications to you. Sometimes, you can see your NHS GP as a private patient but only a handful of NHS GP’s, who see patients privately, will provide detox medication: This is due to the supervision needed.

Can the NHS Provide a Detox At Home?
All drug and alcohol services in the community are provided through your local authority. Sometimes, the NHS is commissioned to provide services. An at home detox may be part of the services the NHS are commissioned for in your area. However, there budgets are very tight and they will only provide an alcohol home detox after you have engaged with services for time. You will have to attend assessments, key work sessions and group work before they will take you on for a home detox.
What If I Go to A+E?
Your local accident and emergency department is not funded to provide a detox. If you take yourself to A+E because you have stopped drinking they will give you advice on how much to drink to stay safe and discharge you.
In extreme circumstances, your local A+E department will provide treatment only until you are safe to leave the department. They will not provide a detox, merely get you to a point where there duty of care ends. Remember: Their duty of care is only to what is reasonable in the circumstances. In short: Because they are not funded to provide a detox they are under no obligation to do so.
Internet Home Detox Company Scams
Most companies advertising home detox on the internet are providing illegal services. It is a little complicated to explain:
Where a medical doctor (and not a nurse/pharmacist/paramedic prescriber) works at a Care Quality Commission (CQC) registered addictions service, and they have the additional qualifications registered with the General Medical Council, they can provide a home detox as a “side Hussle”. This is perfectly legal and you will be under the care of a dedicated doctor.
When you use a doctor in this way they must assess you, take payment and supervise your treatment. The second a third party becomes involved, it becomes an unregistered service.
The problem is that most companies on the internet are, literally, selling you £15 worth of medication for over £1900. They send you pills to take at home after a very scant telephone call with someone you won’t know the name of. There is no recourse if something goes wrong.
These internet companies will tell you they are providing a legal and safe service: They aren’t. A home detox has a certain amount of risk attached to it and it is not something you should purchase over the phone.
Who Can Have a Home Detox?
While there are nationally recognised criteria, some clinicians will add in additional safeguards. With alcohol, usually, only those clients who drink under 30 units a day can be considered. Other exclusion criteria include:
- Completed a detox within the last 6 months
- On prescription for benzodiazepines, Gabapentin, Pregabalin, Zopiclone and other contraindicated medications
- History of seizures
- Diagnosis of major mental illness
- Lives alone and unable to secure the assistance of an adult over the age of 18 to support
