What is a Cocaine Detox?
Unlike Alcohol or Heroin there is no recognised medically assisted withdrawal from Cocaine. There are medications that your addictions clinician will prescribe for you, on a short term basis, which are used “as and when” to get you through the withdrawals.
Cocaine is a very short term acting drug. Adjunctive medication is only, usually, needed for a few days and should be completed within a week. If not, you run the risk of become addicted to it.
Why is Cocaine Addictive?
Cocaine works on dopamine receptors in your brain. It stops the brain absorbing dopamine meaning there will be an excess in the body. When this happens you will experience:
- Boundless energy
- Feelings of intense wellbeing
- No need for sleep or rest
- Not feeling hungry
- Being able to talk to people where you would normally feel too shy

Is Cocaine Dangerous?
Yes: Cocaine is not only dangerous but can kill you on the first use. Due to the way it works on the brain Cocaine can do the following to the body:
- Coma
- Heart attack
- Irregular heartbeat or changes to the heart rhythm
- Seizure
- Stroke
It can also leave you with:
- Abdominal pain
- Severe anxiety
- Chronic dizziness
- Extreme paranoia
- Uncontrollable restlessness
- Marked tremor
- Continuous nausea
- Violent behaviour
Does the Way You Take Cocaine Make a Difference?
Yes. The faster the drug gets into your bloodstream, the more it will affect you. If you inject Cocaine directly into the bloodstream, it will have an immediate effect. Smoking it produces a quicker effect than those who snort it.
What If I mix it With Other Drugs?
Mixing Cocaine (usually as Crack) with Heroin, in injectable form, is known as Speed balling. Your brain then has to cope with two different drugs with two different methods of action. This increases the risk of medical emergency and fatality.

It is common in high stress occupations to use Cocaine to speed yourself up, then Alcohol/Ketamine/GHB/GBL/Benzodiazepine’s at the end of the day to slow yourself down. This creates a perfect storm. You will soon find the periods in-between using “up” and “down” drugs becomes very close together and, due to tolerance in your brain receptors, you will need more and more.
Other drugs have the potential to significantly increase the effects of Cocaine. This raises the risk of overdose, medical emergency and death.

Long Term Effects of Cocaine Use
Not only will Cocaine affect your physical health, it will also damage your mental wellbeing. As your brain adapts to the presence of Cocaine, if you stop using it you force your brain to make an immediate adjustment: It can’t.
When you stop using Cocaine, it is common to experience the following:
- Extreme fatigue
- Devastating depression
- Inability to experience pleasure
- Uncontrollable appetite
- Heightened irritability
- Chronic paranoia
- Raging insomnia
- Uncontrollable cravings for Cocaine
Stages of Cocaine Withdrawal
There are differing schools of thought on the stages of Cocaine withdrawal. Our experienced Addictions Clinicians suggest that there are three:
- Crash: Within a few hours after last use, and up to a week, you are likely experience extreme fatigue, severe anxiety as well as chronic headaches and intense depression. Very few people survive this first week without relapsing if they are not in rehab.
- Withdrawal: After the first week, the withdrawals will get worse and the cravings will, too. During this second stage you are likely to experience continuing severe depression, panic, agitation, anxiety, flu like symptoms, tremors, nightmares, poor memory and concentration.
This second phase can last up to a month. Again, without professional help, relapse is a real possibility.
Withdrawing from cocaine may take as long as a month or more depending on the severity and length of the addiction. Without professional addiction intervention, cocaine addicts usually relapse at this stage if they made it this far.

Extinction:
To date, there has been very little research on this final stage. Some experts reckon it may last for years. The symptoms will not be as strong, but may persist.
During this final phase, cravings will persist , usually when in a stressful situation. It is common to feel bored, restless, hopeless and depressed. All these factors are huge indicators for relapse.
What Does a Home Cocaine Detox Involve?
The first step is to speak to one of our experienced addictions clinicians. We never charge for initial consultations. If it is felt that you are suitable (which depends on a number of factors) your clinician will arrange adjunctive medication for you alongside therapy sessions delivered on line or in person.
This initial period of therapy is usually over a few weeks to a month, then reduced in frequency to fortnightly, monthly. Aftercare is available should you feel you may relapse. Therapy sessions can be arranged around you, depending on the availability of your therapist.
The therapy will address underlying trauma, how you deal with stress, triggers and why you became addicted in the first place. One of the major elements of therapy is to help you build a mental toolkit that you can use to deal with cravings and prevent relapse. Family therapy can also be arranged.
Why is Residential Rehab Preferable?
The cravings from cocaine withdrawal, as well as the other symptoms, can be totally overwhelming. Your family, even with the best intentions, will not have the skills to manage the situation. You will, most likely, end up calling your dealer because you won’t be able to deal it. When you stop using Cocaine, you loose tolerance to it. As such, this puts you at serious risk of overdose, because you will take more than you need to.
In rehab there are support staff on duty: 24/7. Many have been in recovery for years. There are therapy groups and sessions every day of the week. In addition to group sessions and individual ones there are adjunctive therapies added in. You will be busy, most of the day, and when you are not there is always someone on hand to support you.
If the cravings become too great, the staff will know what to do: Many have been where you are. Your addictions clinician will prescribe medication for you to get you through. Everyone there is interested in only one thing: Recovery.
Family therapy is often part of the recovery process. Having these sessions in a neutral place can be far more effective than at home. Starting to repair the damage done by Cocaine, before you return home, can lay the groundwork for your continued abstinence and recovery when you leave rehab.
