What Is A Detox Centre?
Rehab and Detox: They go together.
A detox centre takes you from a place of dependency and addiction to a place of sobriety and abstinence but, be under no illusion: It is not a spa retreat or a holiday camp.
Rehab is hard work. It is a residential environment. Some offer a full hotel style service, others a more communal type of living. We will explain, further below.
No centre in the UK will provide a detox only. Why? Because to detox, without rehab, is a surefire way back to addiction.
If you need a detox this will commence as soon as possible. For some clients, due to their level of intoxication on arrival, it isn’t safe to use medication until the blood alcohol level reduces. A breathalyser is used to assess this.
As soon as someone is physically well enough to join in the therapy sessions and groups they will be made to feel very welcome. It may take a day , or two for some, to be able to join in due to their physical state when detoxing.
Rehab involves therapy, relapse prevention and aftercare. For a Detox Centre Leeds call and get free and impartial advice from an experienced addictions clinician.
Why Do I Need Therapy In a Rehab Centre?
No one chooses to be caught up in the madness of addiction. It is a serious illness that claims lives.
Very often it is the result of unresolved psychological trauma, PTSD or another untreated mental health condition: Or a combination. Using drugs and alcohol pushes painful memories to the back of the mind. Detoxing brings the thoughts to the fore so you need expert help to process and manage them.
All centres, the world over, use a group therapy model. Why? Because it works. Individual therapy is a very , very exhausting process. Most centres provide an hour of individual therapy weekly but the main focus is the group process.
12 STEP/SMART/eclectic: It really doesn’t matter what model they use. The only thing that matters is that you get into recovery. 12 STEPS has been around nearly hundred years.
It has helped millions over the decades. SMART is a different approach and there is no evidence that favours one over the other. Detox Centre Leeds is available across a range of approaches but it really is not important which one you use.

Will I Need A Detox?
Maybe: Maybe not. It depends on several factors including:
- What you are taking
- How much you are using
- How long you have been using it for
- Prescribed medications
When you use drugs and alcohol, just as when you take medication and drink coffee, they have an effect on receptors in your brain.
Some open up chemical channels allowing for a release of naturally occurring chemicals, while others close them meaning chemicals are not released. Some partially open or close channels: But let’s keep it simple!
These immediate changes can be very dangerous. For example, if you took cocaine, even for the first time, it can be fatal for some while others experience a stimulant effect.
Some people, if they drink 10 pints of beer they fall asleep, others get aggressive and some become very ill: It is a lot to do with genetics and DNA.
When you use drugs and alcohol for a sustained period of time your brain becomes accustomed to their presence and you will develop what is known as tolerance.
This means that you will need more and more of the drug/alcohol to have the same effect as the amount you started to use when you fell into addiction.
If you stop using (or reduce too quickly) your brain will go into a state of flux. It will not be able to accommodate such a quick change and the chemical messages sent around the body will be out of synch. It is these incorrect chemical messages that causes withdrawal.
How Does Detox Work?
A detox has absolutely nothing to do with carrot juice or sweating it out in a sauna: It is everything to do with science.
Detox medication mimics the effects of the drug or alcohol you have been using so that you do not experience significant withdrawals. There may be some discomfort and adjunctive medication is also scripted on an “as and when” basis.
In order not to overload the receptors, which would cause overdose, it is sometimes necessary to wait a few hours until you start to show signs of withdrawal.
For alcohol clients, a breathalyser is used. For heroin patients there are rating scales that are used, as well as objective signs.
If you did not have a detox your brain will not be able to adjust to the immediate change. The incorrect chemical messages would be sent.
For alcohol patients this could mean seizures, hallucinations, coma and even death. It is a common misconception that heroin detox, without medical intervention, is just an uncomfortable few days: Not so. Left untreated it can be fatal.
Some drugs, due to their method of action on receptors, only produce short term effects and , as such, there is no detox. Cocaine is a good example.
However, this does not mean there will not be any physical symptoms. A short term course of adjunctive medication is usually provided on an “as and when” basis.
