Pregabalin addiction is a growing problem.
No one envisaged the problems it would go on to cause.
Our clinicians work in rehabs and have treated hundreds of people who lives were caught up in the madness of addiction through Pregabalin.
It is now a controlled drug and GP’s are under pressure from NHS commissioners’ to reduce it’s use. This is where patients will try and circumvent and buy on line or from street dealers.
What Is Pregabalin?
A prescription drug, it is used for, among other things:
- Epileptic seizure control
- Fibromyalgia
- Diabetic nerve pain
- Anxiety
- Alcohol dependency
Professor Richard Silverman’s team at Northwestern University in America discovered, in 1988, that Pregabalin helped to increase the concentration of neurotransmitters in the brain.
As with any drug/medication and alcohol (even caffeine) after a time, your brain will become used to the presence of Pregabalin. A phenomenon known as tolerance.
Pregabalin affects the brain by modulating neurotransmitter release, reducing pain signals, and alleviating anxiety, making it effective for treating conditions like neuropathic pain and epilepsy. It works, primarily, by attaching itself to certain chemical channels and reduces the release of naturally occurring brain chemicals.
Why Is Pregabalin Addictive?
Medication, drugs, alcohol and even caffeine affect brain chemistry and the brain get’s used to this. When the brain notices that you have stopped taking Pregabalin it will try and correct the balance but it won’t be able to in quick time.
The brain simply can not cope with the state of flux that happens and the wrong chemical messages are sent, leading to physical symptoms.
Among other symptoms you may experience:
- Chronic nausea
- Severe headaches
- Uncontrollable diarrhea
- Severe anxiety
- Excessive sweating
- Crushing chest pain
- Insatiable cravings
- Seizures
Recovery From Pregabalin Addiction
In rehab! With a controlled reduction plan, under the care of an addictions clinician, therapists, nurses and support staff, recovery is possible.
Pregabalin is highly addictive, trying to treat yourself at home is incredibly difficult, highly risky and unlikely to succeed.
A reduction plan, agreed with the in house clinician is the first element of recovery from Pregabalin addiction.
Detox is the first part of the recovery process alongside:
- Therapy to understand underlying issues
- Relapse prevention to help you avoid getting back to addiction
- Aftercare
Rehab Provides All The Elements For Recovery
In rehab you will be provided with all the elements necessary for a successful recovery: Detox, therapy, relapse prevention and aftercare.
Pregabalin addiction, as we have discussed, can sometimes start with a valid prescription. As such, it may be necessary to seek an alternative medication for an underlying issue. For those with epilepsy this will need to be discussed with a neurologist. People that take Pregabalin for nerve pain and other non epileptic conditions have a variety of options that can be discussed with the in-house clinician.
Your route to addiction may be different to someone dependent on alcohol, but don’t worry! The therapy team will know what to do. Most therapists in rehab centres have been in active recovery for years themselves.
All rehab centres, the world over, use a group therapy model. Individual therapy sessions are provided, once a week. For nearly one hundred years, group therapy has helped millions of people, across the world, overcome addiction.
Individual sessions augment the group approach with the group process remaining the cornerstone of recovery.
The Therapy Process In Rehab
Being welcomed into the groups and sessions will put you at ease. Everyone there is working towards the same goal: Abstinence and recovery. Usually, the therapists in rehab centres are in recovery themselves. They understand where you are coming from.
Everyone’s trajectory towards recovery is different, but there are common themes. Therapy will help you to explore unresolved trauma, underlying anxiety, symptoms of PTSD and other mental health conditions.
You will learn how to regulate your emotions and react more positively to stressful situations. The painful memories that Pregabalin suppressed can be explored in an atmosphere of unconditional support. The benefits are immeasurable.
Pregabalin Detox At Home
Our experienced addictions clinicians really recommend you don’t try this.
As you are detoxing from Pregabalin, even with the best clinical and psychological care and 24/7 support staff you are likely to experience some craving.
At home, without the support and care of trained and experienced clinicians, therapists, support staff and your peers in recovery you run the risk of relapse.
For the most part, when you detox you will experience cravings. For some these are manageable but for others they are intolerable. Your tolerance will have dropped so when you succumb you run the risk of overdose as you will take what you need to settle yourself. This will be more than the brain can tolerate.
GP’s can discuss a reduction plan (indeed they may have already called you in to discuss it as they are under pressure from NHS commissioners)
Free Advice From an Experienced Addictions Clinician
Our experienced addictions clinicians are well versed in treating people who are dependent on Pregabalin.
Using an app, whichever clinician is free will take your call. Wherever in the country they are, they have access to instant information on services in your area. In any event, they can advise you on treatment plans and cost.
Our clinicians will also be able to advise you on what you don’t need. Yoga with goats, green organic tea and shakra realignment is all very nice but wholly unnecessary (and expensive!)
We only signpost to centres registered with the Care Quality Commission as it is a legal requirement. Our service is registered with the Information Commissioners Office.
