What is the cost of addiction rehab in the UK?

Probably not as expensive as youy might think!

Rehab doesn’t need to be expensive. When thinking about the cost of addiction rehab UK residents face, it’s important to know there are affordable solutions.

There are many different options, across the UK. The cost of addiction rehab UK varies based on location and services offered.

There are high end centres and more functional ones. The core elements will always be the same:

Detox, therapy, relapse prevention and aftercare.

Making the decision to get help can take years. Making the right choice is paramount.

Our experienced addictions clinicians work in rehab centres. They know what you need and what you don’t.

Let us share their advice with you.

Cost of addiction Rehab UK: What You Need

Successful recovery comes with four elements of treatment:

Detox (for those who need it) , therapy, relapse prevention and aftercare: Four essential elements.

Not all centres provide a full range of detox treatments. All provide alcohol and cocaine detox’s but quite a few are not geared up for Heroin and opioids.

Alcohol

With regards to alcohol detox, some centres are pointed towards those on the lower end of the spectrum as the accommodation is separate to the rest of the centre and 24/7 staffing isn’t required for the accommodation provision.

When someone’s alcohol intake is greater (or there are other potential difficulties such as previous alcohol withdrawal related seizures) they will need a centre that has dedicated staff on duty, 24/7 to respond to any issues as well as monitoring clients (standard practice for the first few days).

Therapy

Without therapy, relapse is inevitable. Understanding the cost of addiction rehab UK in relation to therapy options can help you make informed decisions.

Different models of group therapy are used in rehab centres.

Some of the centres use a 12 step approach, some use a SMART model. Others, an eclectic mix. It really doesn’t matter. Our clinicians can advise you as to what model is used at a particular centre.

All centres provide a weekly session of individual therapy.

Adjunctive Therapy

Outside of the traditional group therapy model, there are a whole host of additional therapies that can be incorporated into addiction rehab treatment.

Aromatherapy, acupuncture, sound therapy (gong baths) and art therapy are examples of bolt on treatments that can be found at some rehab centres.

There is plenty of evidence and researchto support their use. They are perfectly safe and many clients find them very useful.

Adjunctive therapies are, in no way, essential to a successful recovery.

Cost of addiction Rehab UK: What You Don’t Need

Some of the most common questions asked, are:

  • Is there a gym?
  • Does the rehab have a swimming pool?
  • Will transport be provided to and from home?
  • Can I have additional individual therapy sessions?
  • What about rapid detox?
  • Can I go overseas to save money?

Let’s look at these:

Gyms

Rehab is for recovery not to prepare for the Olympics. The cost of addiction rehab UK has to account for clinical care, not gym facilities.

Most centres have some basic equipment.

It would be a significant risk for people undergoing detox to be using treadmills, lifting heavy weights, etc.

The cost of a fully equipped/staffed gym would increase treatment costs.

Swimming Pools

For safety reasons, a swimming pool in a rehab is an absolute non-starter.

Due to the effects of detox medication it simply would not be safe.

The cost of a pool/maintenance and lifeguards would, as with gyms, be passed on in enhanced treatment costs.

Transport

Some centres, if you live within a certain radius of the centre, will provide transport.

For some people, it would not be safe to stop drinking/taking drugs before arrival at the centre so “sober transport” (a driver who is trained/experienced in helping clients going to treatment) is essential.

For those who live a little further out, there will be a nominal charge for this service.

Additional Individual Therapy Sessions

Every centre offers a weekly session of individual therapy.

One sessions is sufficient. You can’t speed up your recovery by having more. Indeed, it might set you back.

Individual sessions are very emotionally exhaustive. One a week is the limit.

Rapid Detox

Never try to do this.

It won’t work and you will relapse: Quickly.

When you are addicted to drugs and alcohol your brain adapts to the presence of what you are taking. Chemical changes are made. is is known as tolerance.

You will, in time, need to take more of the substance to have the same effect as the amount you started off at.

If you rush a detox you will still be craving and your tolerance will have dropped.

This is when people overdose, accidentally. They take an amount of the substance they think they need to reduce their cravings. This is then likely to be too much because of a lack of tolerance. People die because of this.

Overseas Treatment

This can be arranged.

Think about how you are going to get there. If you take drugs/drink to a degree that you can’t stop before entering a rehab.

Trying to smuggle drugs onto a plane can have extremely serious consequences. It would be smuggling. In some countries, this can carry the death penalty.

Going overseas is not always lower cost.

Cost of addiction rehab UK: What Are The Options

In short? You are the client so you make the choice.

As with other forms of private medical treatment, a centre will only accept you for treatment if it felt appropriate and safe to do so.

There are lower cost centres which provide the essentials of treatment with your own room and bathroom. There are very high end centres with manicured lawns, your own private suite with Michelin restaurant trained chefs.

Will you recover quicker the more you spend? No.

Is a lower cost centre just as good? Yes!

Referral Agents

Middlemen (or middle women!)

Referral agents get very large commissions by selling client details to rehab centres.

They are sales people who, usually, have never been to a rehab centre and are working from their kitchen table on a laptop.

Referral agents make promises that centres can’t keep because all they want is commission.

Our clinicians offer free advice and signposting. If you need a referral for a rehab, they do not charge for this. The only charge we make is for private outpatient services.
