What Happens In Rehab?
There is no mystique around rehab: It is hard work. Rehab is not a holiday camp or a spa break. The goal of rehab is to take you from a place of dependency to lifelong abstinence.
Some, not all, people who go into rehab will need a detox (which will explain further down). This runs in tandem with rehab. If you do need a detox, as soon as you are physically well enough to join in, you will be welcomed into the therapy groups and individual sessions.
If your journey involves Detox and Rehab Manchester, you will find comprehensive support throughout.
On occasion, it can take a day or two before someone is ready to start therapy due to the withdrawals. While medication is provided to deal with these, it can still be a rough ride for some for a day or two. Full support is given by the on-site clinician and nursing and support staff.
As soon as you are ready it is a requirement of the treatment compact, at every centre, that you start therapy.
The therapy will help you to understand why you are addicted to a substance or behaviour (i.e. gambling, port, etc). Addiction is not a choice: It is a symptom. It is not a social issue but a very serious illness that claims lives if not treated.
When you are detoxed (or at least over the worse part) your brain will be able to process the emotions that come to the fore after being suppressed by alcohol/drugs/behavioral addiction. You may have unresolved trauma from childhood, PTSD and/or untreated mental health issues.
Why Do Some People Need a Detox?
When you use drugs and alcohol, as with caffeine and prescription medicine, they affect receptors in your brain, either by opening or closing chemical channels. This means that naturally occurring bodily chemicals are either stopped or provided in excess.
This can be problematic in itself. If you drink very large quantities of alcohol, in one go, it can be fatal. A large amount of cocaine, even the first time could be your last.
After a prolonged period of time using a substance your brain becomes used to its presence. This is called tolerance. If you suddenly stop using (or reduce too quickly) the brain cannot cope with the sudden change.
As a result, the chemical messaging system misfires and the wrong chemicals are restricted or over released: This is what causes withdrawal.
Detox has nothing to do with flushing toxins out of your body: It is all about science.
Detox medication mimics the effects of the substance you are dependent on. This prevents the misfiring of incorrect chemical messaging. By reducing, slowly, withdrawal is minimized.
Not everyone will need a detox. Cocaine, for example, due to the way it works on receptors, is a very short-acting drug.
That is not to say it is safe but a traditional detox is not required. In rehab the in-house clinician will provide a short course of adjunctive medication for use on an “as and when” basis to assist with some of the issues caused when you stop taking cocaine. As cocaine is a stimulant there is no recognized detox.
For others, such as those reliant on alcohol and ketamine, a detox is absolutely essential. It can be life-saving. While a detox cannot remove all the symptoms of withdrawal, it can minimize them and prevent a medical emergency.
It is a common myth that a heroin detox can be done at home by locking yourself in a room with a sick bucket and a bottle of water.
The cravings will become so intense that it is inevitable that you will go and use. The problem is that, as you have not been using for a few days, your tolerance will have dropped.
This means that you will need more than you normally used to get settled. Overdose, by accident, is a common problem here. A home opioid detox can be fatal due to dehydration. Forget what you see on television.

How Will Rehab Help Me Not To Relapse?
An essential element of rehab is relapse prevention. This is usually delivered in skills workshops and addressed in your weekly individual therapy session.
Relapse happens: Fact. We sincerely hope it doesn’t happen to you but it doesn’t have to be final. You will learn vital skills on how to negotiate tricky situations (and people) for when you go back to your life at home, aided by the strategies learned during Detox and Rehab Manchester.
Alcohol is available everywhere: corner shops, supermarkets and petrol stations. It cities it is quicker to have drugs delivered to your house than a pizza.
The saying goes that if someone wanted to find an off licence on the moon they would give it a go. In other words, knowing how to deal with triggers, such as being confronted with alcohol on a store shelf, is a valuable skill.
How to explain to people that you don’t want to be around drugs and alcohol (or betting shops/porn for those with behavioural addictions) is another skill that will really help.
Aftercare
Knowing that there is expert help and support available, when you need it, is essential.
All rehab centres provide a minimum of a years aftercare. This is, usually, a weekly support group (virtually or in person, depending on how far the centre is from you) and telephone check in/support.
Sometimes not wanting to let others down (though rehab is about you) can be a useful reinforcer.
How Can Find Me a Rehab Help?
As clinicians who work in rehabs we know what you will need (and what you don’t).
We can advise you on treatment plans, how long a treatment plan will be for and how much it will cost as well as where you can go locally to you in Manchester.
Addiction detox and rehab is hard work. You can use a low cost centre that provides excellent care, or push the boat out and stay in luxury surroundings: Either will do the same thing.
Sure you can go somewhere where they will serve you organic green tea while having your shakra realigned before doing yoga with a goat. However, these costs will be reflected in the treatment costs.
Using an app, our clinicians answer calls when they are free. This means there is always someone available to answer your call or email.

What about confidentiality and safety?
We are registered with the Information Commissioners Office. Your information can never be disclosed (or discussed) with anyone else unless you give very explicit permission: Not even your GP.
While we always advise that you involve your GP, we understand why you might be reluctant. Centres may sometimes ask for a medical summary from your GP surgery. This can be obtained, without charge, from the practice admin team.
Modern day NHS systems allow a receptionist to print off a report without recourse to your GP.
As centres are legally required to be registered with the Care Quality Commission we only signpost to those that are.
