Methaqualone was first discovered in India in the 1950's as a treatment for Malaria.

Why is Methaqualone addictive?

Methaqualone is extremely addictive.

When you take a substance on a regular basis, your brain becomes accustomed to its presence.

Moreover, this prolonged exposure causes the brain to change the way it operates.

This is known as tolerance.

Consequently, when you reach a state of tolerance, you will need ever-increasing amounts to have the same effect as the initial dose you started with.

Finally, if you stop taking the substance suddenly (or reduce the dosage too quickly), you will experience very distressing withdrawals:

Tremors
Irritability
Restlessness
Vomiting
Nausea
Weakness
Hallucinations
Headaches
Mental confusion
Insomnia
Seizures

Methaqualone and dopamine

Methaqualone  produces excess amounts of dopamine, which is a chemical the brain typically produces on its own.

Having too much dopamine, or too much dopamine concentrated in some parts of the brain and not enough in other parts, is linked to being more competitive, aggressive and having poor impulse control.

It can lead to conditions that include ADHD, binge eating, addiction and gambling.

Changes to brain chemistry

When you use Methaqualone, your brain adapts to its presence, even after a short period of just four days, consequently changing the way it functions.

This means that you will need to take more to have the same effect as the amount you first started with.

Chronic pins and needles (paraesthesia) is very common in the early stages of addiction to Methaqualone.

When you take more and more of it you will also see a huge increase in your pain threshold.

This is extremely dangerous as you can hurt yourself without knowing.

Long term Ataxia (uncontrollable muscle twitching) is common and eventually, the nervous system will fail leading to fatality.

Another long-term effect is a condition called “ataxia”, or uncontrollable muscle twitches and movements.

Over time, increasing doses of methaqualone can cause the nervous system to shut down, leading to coma and death.

Most people will become seriously addicted within two weeks.

For new admissions, it can be 24-48 hours , on occasion, before someone is able to take part.

Sitting alongside this programme, many centers also offer adjunctive treatments and therapies such as:

Yoga

Mindfulness

Art therapy

Gentle exercise and group walks

Music therapy

Individual sessions (for those staying more than a week)

Clients, before leaving, are linked in with support groups in their local community, be they voluntary or statutory. A psychological tool kit is built up so that clients have a selection of techniques to employ.
