What makes a good rehab centre?

An interesting question which has a multitude of answers.

Our experienced addictions clinicians work in them so they can answer this!

Things You Need From a Rehab Centre

There are four essential elements for successful recovery:

  • Detox
  • Therapy
  • Relapse Prevention Skills
  • Aftercare

Detox

Not everyone needs one (and it is dangerous to have one if you don’t), but if you do not all centres provide all types of detox.

Nearly all centres provide an alcohol detox but some do not cater for opioid clients.

A detox takes as long as it takes. It can not be rushed.

There are some established timelines for detox’s but these can never be written in stone. Sometimes it may take a little longer, sometimes a day or two earlier.

Rapid Detox

Never attempt this.

Rapid detox doesn’t work. Why? Because it can’t.

When you are addicted to drugs/alcohol the brain alters the way it works. When you stop, incorrect chemical messaging occurs which is why you experience withdrawals. Detox medication adjusts the imbalance.

Drug and alcohol use causes a phenomenon called tolerance. This means your brain is used to the substance and you need more and more to have the same effect as the amount you first started with to have the same effect.

Cravings are a fact of life with detox and rehab. If you detox too fast, not only may you become physically unwell, you will find the cravings incredibly difficult to overcome.

If you use, you will use what you think you need to settle yourself. As you tolerance will have dropped a fatal accidental overdose is very, very likely.

Therapy

12 STEP/SMART/eclectic: It really doesn’t matter which model is used.

Group therapy for addiction recovery has been around for nearly one hundred years. Why? Because it works.

Does 12 STEP group therapy work.

Yes!

People, who have never been in treatment will give you their opinion, but the fact remains that 12 step programmes have saved (and continue to save) millions of lives.

It works if you do the work and have a positive mindset.

Individual Therapy

All centres provide an hourly session of individual therapy a week.

These sessions are intense and tiring. Anymore than one a week would be counterproductive.

Key Takeaways

  • A good rehab center focuses on four key elements: detox, therapy, relapse prevention skills, and aftercare.
  • Detox should be tailored to individual needs; rapid detox is unsafe and ineffective.
  • Therapy options, like 12-step programs, are essential for recovery and have proven effective over time.
  • Aftercare provides ongoing support, typically including weekly group sessions and dedicated resources for help.
  • Avoid referral agents; they often promote centers for profit without genuine understanding or care.

Relapse Prevention

Learning how to keep yourself abstinent and sober is as important as detox, therapy and aftercare.

Relapse happens: Fact.

It doesn’t happen to everyone but if it happens to you, being forewarned is to be forearmed.

Addiction is a chronic illness. Like other chronic illness, relapse is part and parcel of the disease process.

People with asthma and diabetes relapse just as people suffering from addiction to.

Being prepared for situations that could be stressful (stress is a major contributor to relapse) and people that could lead you to use is essential.

What makes a good rehab? Aftercare

The final link in the chain but by no means any less important.

All centres provide a minimum of a years aftercare.

Usually this is a weekly support group as well as regular telephone check in.

If you are struggling, there will be a dedicated number to call for help.

What makes a good rehab? Ask Questions

What therapy model is used?

What qualifications do the staff have?

Is the clinician a GP, a consultant or a nurse specialist prescriber?

A reputable centre will be happy to answer these questions.

Referral agents can’t.

Chandeliers, Swimming Pools, Gyms and Caviar

You don’t need them and you will be paying for them!

Rehab is hard work. It is not a holiday or a spa break.

Sure, if you want to splash out on a high end centre with goat yoga, gong baths and a masseuse it is available. Fact it, none of these things make a real difference.

What Makes a Good Rehab: Referral Agents

Referral agents are salespeople: Nothing more.

They have websites purporting to have rehab centres. They don’t.

Referral agents sell your details to rehab centres for eyewatering amounts of commission.

A swimming pool, caviar for breakfast, a personal butler. We have heard it all. They will make promises that no one can keep solely for money.

The vast majority work from their kitchen table and have never been inside a rehab.

Avoid them.

Registration

All rehab centres have to be registered with the statutory body responsible for the area. For example, in England, a centre must be registered with the Care Quality Commission.

It is essential, before you pay a deposit, to check, for yourself, that the centre is registered.

We only signpost to those that are.
