In January 2022 the local press in York reported that there was a serious problem with drugs and alcohol in York. They reported that, in 2020, there were 21 deaths attributed by the coroner to have been caused by alcohol. However, another 69 deaths were recorded as having been indirectly caused by alcohol-related conditions.
The journalistic investigation also showed that sales of alcohol in York are higher than those of the average for England and that fewer adults were abstaining from alcohol than for the average for England. For the financial year 2019-2020 admissions to hospitals, directly attributed to alcohol, were at a rate of 545 per 100,000 adults in York. This can be seen against the average for England at 519.
During 2019-2020 (the last set of figures published) 446 adults, who had not previously sought help, engaged with services. Out of this number, 82 were adults with children living with them.
With regards to drugs, data from the Office for National Statistics shows that drug deaths in York tripled between 2009 and 2019.
