Drug Use in London
There is a plethora of evidence to demonstrate that a significant number of Londoner’s use drugs. Research on drug and alcohol use have become more in depth and for the years 2016-2017 and 2018-2019, for example, they reflected that 9.7 percent of adults, aged between 16 to 59 , reported using illegal drugs within a 12 month period. During that time, this was slightly lower than the rate for the Southwest of England, when the figure stood at 10.8% and higher than the North East of England which has the lowest rate at 7.1%.
Rising Drug-Related Deaths
While drug misuse deaths are on the increase (and have been for over a decade) London has a relatively low drug death rate. For example, the Office for National Statistics data showed that in 2020, 2996 adults died as a result of drug use. This was the highest number since records first began to be complied. This translates to a death rate of 33.1 per 1,000,000 adults. In 2020, London had 296 drug related deaths.
For those deaths attributed by the coroner as being due to drug use/complications of, the most commonly cited drugs were opioids which accounted for 210 of this 296 cohort.
London has a very significant cocaine problem, with an illegal trade worth more than one billion pounds a year. This translates to a daily use, across the city, of 23 kilos of class A drugs: Every 24 hours. When you break this down this means that £2.75 million pounds worth of class A drugs:365 days a year. This is twice that of any other city in Europe (pro rata to population/land mass). Scientists at London’s King’s college university tested the wastewater in the capital and found it to have high traces of benzoylecgonines (BE) this is the compound produced when the body breaks down cocaine. Using comparative studies, they found the amount of cocaine being consumed in London was more that Barcelona (12.74KG), Amsterdam (4.62KG) and Berlin (4.62KG): Combined.
Boroughs with Serious Drug Issues
While the drug related death rate in London is lower than other parts of England, as shown above, the Boroughs of Islington, Camden and Tower Hamlets have some of the most serious drug related issues in the UK based on drug related deaths and hospital admissions.
Alcohol Misuse in London
In London, alcohol is also a concern with up to 35% of all those attending hospital in the capital being due to alcohol. It is also closely associated with traffic accidents as well as pedestrian fatalities and injuries as well as domestic assaults and other criminal offences. While the capital does not have the highest rate of alcohol consumption in England, it does have the most serious problems related to alcohol induced/attributed crime. It is estimated that alcohol costs the taxpayers of London over £2 billion: annually.
Cost of Private Treatment in London
For fee paying/private clients treatment in London is very, very cost prohibitive with significant cost savings should a client be able to travel only a very short distance , indeed, outside of the capital. However, private therapy services in London can be accessed quickly, and at relatively low costs. For those able to access treatment centres in central London they are available, usually, immediately.
Immediate Help and Support
Help is available in London: Immediately. As the capital city it can be cost prohibitive to access treatment, yet very significant savings can be made by travelling just a few miles north of London. If you need free rehab advice UK, 24 hour addiction help and where to find an addiction recovery centre, Paul is available to give free, impartial and confidential advice, 24 hours a day, online or on the phone.
