In Wales, over a 12 month period, there are over 15,500 admissions to hospital due to alcohol related conditions for those aged between 50-59.  While the numbers are decreasing this is still a concern. For drug related conditions, there are in excess of 6,500 adults, aged between 30-34 years of age who are admitted to hospital every year in Wales.

With regards to fatalities, 540 adults, a year, die from alcohol related conditions and around 327 from drug poisoning of which approximately 208 defined as attributable to drug misuse.

In a recent review in 2018 one county in North Wales found that, a spouse or partner of the victim was the offender in 41.7% of alcohol related violence, with nearly two-thirds (65.3%) of the offences occurring within a dwelling. Hospitality establishments were the most common premises for offences to occur outside the home with 12.1% of the total.

For the last set of figures published in 2020-2021 there were 22,684 adults referred to community drug and alcohol services in Wales. Of that figure, 1,337 did not attend. This was a slight decrease in referrals compared to 2019-2020 of 6.2%. Some of those referred were re-referrals meaning that they had previously been referred.

52% of these adult referrals identified alcohol as being the main problem with 46.7% identifying drugs as the main problem. Men accounted for 60.3% of alcohol referrals and 69.1% of drug referrals. 15.2% of alcohol referrals were for clients under the age of 30 and for drugs: 36.7%. Heroin accounted for 17.7% with cannabis accounting for 11.0% and cocaine: 5.8%

Private treatment in Wales is available and, where clinically appropriate (and space is available), the same day. However, unlike England, there are fewer private centres than there are, pro rata to the size of the country and population. It can sometimes be quicker to access treatment in England , though the centres in Wales are less costly than the majority of the centres in the UK.

The clinic chains, and referral agents, will advertise that they have centres all over the UK: A centre in every city, town and postcode in the UK. The simple truth is: They don’t. By using post-box addresses and serviced office reception services. They do this in order to get you to pick up the phone. Referral agents often use images of clinics that they lift off websites and purport to own the centres. There are, in fact, only a very few actual clinic chains.

Paul is an addictions clinician with three decades of direct clinical experience. He has worked, for several years, referring patients directly into private centres and has excellent relationships with admissions teams at all the major centres in the UK as well as working as an admitting/prescribing clinician in several centres.

All enquiries are treated in the strictest of medical confidence and advice is given without charge and impartially. Paul can advise on treatment options, location, cost and availability. He is available, at all times , on: 0333 041 9922
