Cornwall has been seeing an exponential increase in drug-related deaths over the last three decades. Over the past few years, the number of deaths attributed to drug use has risen: dramatically with 53 recorded by the coroner in 2021. Figures from the Office of National Statistics show a figure of 48 in 2020. When the figures first started to be recorded in 1993 the figure was 19. From this figure of 53 the number that was down to “drug misuse” was 34. For a death to be recorded in this way the underlying cause of death has to be dependency on an illegal drug.
In 2022, there was a dramatic rise in the use of synthetic opioids which is believed to have been responsible for a large number of these drug-related deaths. The figures for 2023 have not yet been released. However, the council estimates that there were 2,560 adults, over the age of 18, in Cornwall who are dependent on heroin and/or crack of which only 54% were receiving treatment.
There are now more adults, than before, who are alcohol-dependent in the area. Figures show that more than 100,000 adults in Cornwall are drinking above NHS advisory levels with 17% considered to be at increasing risk and 4,900 adults dependent on alcohol. There is also an estimated 84,000 adults in the area who binge drink. This is higher than the average for England.
