The science of Phenibut
Phenibut suppresses your central nervous system.
It acts on the same receptors in the brain as benzodiazepines, alcohol and Gapapentin/Pregabalin.
It works in a a similar way
Phenibut is a central nervous system depressant.
Phenibut will make you feel relaxed and calm.
This is because it is very similar to a naturally occurring brain chemical called Gamma Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) which, when released by the brain, will provide a calming feelings and reduce anxiety.

The science of Phenibut
Phenibut is not new.
It was developed in the 1960's when it was called Phenigamma when it was invented by a Soviet research chemist Vsevolod Vasilievich Perekalin.
At the time it was an experimental drug designed to hep adolescents with psychiatric problems.
Very quickly it was noted to have a significant calming effect.
By 1975 it was commonly prescribed in the Soviet Union , under the name Phenibut, for a range of disorders, including:
Insomnia
Anxiety
Depression
Post traumatic stress disorder
Alcohol use disorder
Alcohol withdrawal
Stuttering
Sensory disorders
It was deemed such a wonder drug that Soviet cosmonauts were issued with it to help them with the stress of space flights.
While it is not licenced as a prescription drug in many countries, it is widely available, on-line, as a nootrpoic: A supplement designed to improve your mental abilities as well as for self treating social anxiety.
Usually, it is sold in powder and tablet form.

The emerging problem of Phenibut
In the United States of America, between 2009 and 2019 the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that there had been over 1,300 cases of people being exposed to dangerous levels of Phenibut.
Worryingly, half of this number was in one year alone: 2018-2019 and over sixty percent were adults aged between 18-34.
Patients were being seen in emergency departments with symptoms including:
Drowsiness
Agitation
Tachycardia
Confusion
Acute medical emergencies
Fatality: Three patients fell into a coma and died.
This shows that the drug is being more widely used.
What starts in America soon comes to the UK.
Because Phenibut is new there is very little research behind it's use.
Especially concerning the risk of mixing Phenibut with other drugs, alcohol and prescription medication.
However, early indications are that the three fatalities were directly linked to using Phenibut with alcohol, illegal drugs and opioids.

Risk of overdose with Phenibut
Phenibut use brings with it very severe withdrawal symptoms if you stop using it.
This is because if you use it over a sustained period of time, your brain adjusts the way it works to accommodate it's presence.
A phenomena known as tolerance.
The problem is that you will need more and more to the same effect as the amount you used when you first took it.
If you stop taking it suddenly (or reduce too quickly) your brain simply can not cope.
Incorrect chemical messages will be fired off leading to very significant physical symptoms including:
Anxiety
Depression
Headaches
Agitation
Poor mental functioning

What happens if that people, in withdrawal, will succumb to the cravings (which will be wholly overwhelming) this is where an accidental overdose is very likely. Your tolerance will have dropped, even after just a few hours.
Symptoms of Phenibut overdose include:
Nausea
Vomiting
Extreme drowsiness
Low blood pressure
Kidney faliure
Seizures
Delirium
State of unconsciousness
Coma
Death

The law
In the UK it is illegal to sell it , manufacture it and supply it for sale.
It is not illegal to possess it for personal use.
Phenibut is deemed a psychoactive substance under the 2016 Psychoactive Substances Act.
However, it is not included in the Misuse of Drugs Act (amendments) 1971.
Since 2018 many countries have taken steps to make it's possession illegal because of the problems associated with it.
While there are a few countries that have licenced it for medicinal use, such as Russia, this is an exception to the general rule.
In America it can not be prescribed for you by a Doctor but you can purchase it in food supplements despite it being illegal in the country to sell it in this form.

What about home treatment for Phenibut addiction?
Not reccomended.
Residential treatment is always the optimal treatment choice and will cost a lot less.
Treatment at home, because of the need for medical oversight and 24/7 nurse support would be incredibly cost prohibitive.
It is possible.

Therapy
All centers who provide treatment for opioid addiction provide a fully immersive therapy programme, either along a 12 step approach or a SMART based recovery model. These run seven days a week and , those in treatment, are obliged to attend all sessions if physically well enough to do so. For new admissions, it can be 24-48 hours , on occasion, before someone is able to take part.
Sitting alongside this programme, many centers also offer adjunctive treatments and therapies such as:
Yoga
Mindfulness
Art therapy
Gentle exercise and group walks
Music therapy
Individual sessions (for those staying more than a week)
Clients, before leaving, are linked in with support groups in their local community, be they voluntary or statutory. A psychological tool kit is built up so that clients have a selection of techniques to employ.
