For the last set of published figures (2021) the number of deaths in Stoke on Trent, attributed to drugs and alcohol by a coroner, was at an all-time high at 44. This was an increase from the 40 recorded in the previous year (2020) and also an increase in 2019 (43).

Over three years (2018-2021) the area saw a rate of 17.7 per 100,000 adults dying from drug poisoning; These are the most concerning figures for any area in the West Midlands. The nearest figure to these for any other part of the West Midlands was Cannock with 9.5 per 100,000. This is seen against the average for England, as a whole, at 7.9 per 100,000.  This led to an uplift of 5.3 million pounds as part of the UK Government’s new national drug strategy.

Unfortunately, the Office of National Statistics figures do not differentiate which substances were identified as the cause of death. However, it is known that out of the 417 deaths reported in 2021 that were attributed to drugs, 231 involved opioids, including heroin. 84 involved cocaine.  New (novel) psychoactive substances, such as spice, were responsible for 25 deaths.
